Hi There !!
Today I purchased a free standing wood fire heater.
Im not a fan of the hearths they had on display or the costs…. The lady in store recommended making one.
wondering what kind of tiles/base & materials I would need. I would like it sitting on my heard wood floors …. I don’t want it fixed through the floor if that makes sense.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @krystalball01. It's wonder to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating a hearth.
Your installation manual should provide details of the required hearth size. Once you have those dimensions, you can use compressed fibro as the base and tile over it. All materials need to be non-combustible. However, if you're going to use standard off-the-shelf tiles, there's always going to be a risk that the fireplace's heat could damage them. Hearth manufacturers would typically use tiles designed for high-temp applications. I am not aware of any tiles designed for hearth construction.
Here's a helpful guide: How to lay floor tiles.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
