How do I seal painted wood to be waterproof?

My kids want to paint a fence paling (wood) with acrylic paint. It is not attached to the fence so is being painted in a dry undercover area. The paint they plan on using is a craft acrylic paint ( many colours). They have the plan and I don’t want to change their creative vision - just trying to see if an undercoat/ topcoat is suggested.

What product would we use to seal it so it can go in the rain?

What could we use as an undercoat?

Thanks so much.

Hi @DolceVita,

I suggest undercoating the pailing with White Knight 310g Squirts Undercoat Spray Paint. You can then topcoat their artwork with White Knight 310g Crystal Clear Acrylic Clear Gloss - Gloss.

You could probably get away without the undercoat, but it will help the paint adhere.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

@MitchellMc Thanks for the reply. I haven’t been able to find whether the clear gloss will be ok in the rain. The finished paling will be exposed to the elements so I would like it to be suitable for rain, and heat. Do you know if this product fits that criteria?

It's fine for exterior use, @DolceVita. I've had several conversations with the manufacturer in the past to confirm this.
