Illuminated planter box

Illuminated planter box

I've always wanted to make a Planter Box that was a little bit different to all the other Planter Boxes out there which gave me the idea of adding lighting to the underside of the Capping which adds a lot of ambiance to your deck, porch or pool area. Made from Merbau with a Plastic Potting Container inserted, this Planter will outlast 99.9% of the Planter Boxes on the market. All materials, apart from the lighting, was sourced from Bunnings which made the process a lot easier.

Materials

• 90mm x 19mm Merbau Decking Board: 6 @ 2.4m:  These are used for the sides of the Planter Box.
• 90mm x 19mm Merbau Decking Board: 1 @ 2.4m: This is used for the Floor Support and the Floor.
• 140mm x 19mm Merbau Decking Board: 1 @ 2.4m: This is used for the Capping and the Edge Banding that screws underneath the Capping. The140mm board is milled down to make the Capping and the Edge Banding from the one board.
• 70mm x 45mm Treated Pine: 1 @ 2.4m:  This is used for the legs of the Planter Box
• 17mm Wide x 7mm High LED Light Aluminium Extrusion Channel with Diffuser: 1 @ 2.4: Most come in lengths of 2.1m which is just to short. If all you can find is 2.1m then you will need 2. . I have however added a Link here where you can buy 6 for a very reasonable price. You will have a couple left over which you can use for future projects: https://amzn.to/421BtBt
• Two box’s (50 in a box) of 8g x 40mm exterior grade decking screws. These are used to attach the decking boards and the Capping to the legs.
• 12mm Wood Screws x 12: These are used to attach the Extrusion Channel to the underside of the Capping
• 30mm Wood Screws x 12:  These screws are used to attach the Edge banding to the underside of the Capping.
• Four, 50mm galvanised nails:  These are used to fix the ends of the Capping Boards together.
• LED Strip Light: 1 @ 2.0m: This length of 2.0m is just a little short but as long as you have the end of the strip finishing around the back of the Planter Box you don’t really notice that it is short.
• Four, Rubber Button Caps: These are screwed to the bottom of the legs which keeps the leg off the ground and clear of any water that may rot the leg out after a period of time.
• A tiny amount of decking oil to coat the boards.
• A tiny amount of black exterior grade paint to coat the legs.
• Potting Container:  1 @ 375mm Length x 375mm Wide x 345mm High

Tools

• Tape Measure.
