Hi!
Just got a second hand oak table and the table looks like it’s lost its sheen and stains take a while to get off and don’t just wipe off. I was wondering if I need to oil the table? Or apply sealant? Do I need to sand it prior? Thanks!

It looks like you've picked up a lovely oak table. The surface appears to be in fairly good condition, though it might have lost some of its original sheen. It’s possible that a satin finish was applied previously, which would explain the softer look and feel.
If you're aiming for a shinier, more durable surface that’s easier to clean, I would recommend sanding the current coating back with 240-grit sandpaper. This will smooth out the surface and remove any remaining finish. Once that's done, you can apply Cabot's 1L Gloss Water Based Cabothane Clear Polyurethane Timber Varnish. This product will not only restore the sheen but also provide a strong, protective layer that resists staining and makes the table easier to maintain.
Be sure to follow the product instructions for the best results, and since it's a dining table, you might want to apply multiple coats for added protection.
