Choosing the right plaster for your repair is essential to achieving a smooth, durable finish. Whether you’re fixing small cracks, patching holes, or resurfacing a wall, understanding the type of damage and selecting the appropriate plaster will make the job easier and more effective.

Before selecting a plaster, assess the damage you need to repair. Is it a small crack, a larger hole, or a rough surface that needs smoothing? The right product depends on the size and type of the repair, so it’s important to clearly identify the problem.

Repairing small cracks and dents

For small cracks and surface damage such as nail holes, the best product is a pre-mixed lightweight filler such as Selleys Spakfilla Rapid Gap Filler. This product is easy to apply, dries quickly and sands smoothly, making it ideal for minor repairs.

Simply apply the filler with a plaster knife, smooth it out, allow it to dry, and lightly sand before painting. This method is particularly useful for filling in small holes left after removing picture hooks.

Repairing larger holes

For larger gaps or holes up to 50mm wide, such as those caused by a door handle hitting the wall, CSR Gyprock 2kg Rapid Patch is a great choice. This patching compound provides a stronger repair for larger holes.

The repair process involves filling the hole in layers, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next. Mesh tape can also be used for added reinforcement, ensuring a more solid repair.

Repairing deep holes or missing sections of plaster

If you're dealing with deep holes bigger than 50mm or missing sections of plaster, such as when repairing a cut-out section after electrical work, Gyprock CSR DIY Rapid Plaster Repair Kit is an ideal solution. This kit includes a repair panel that provides a strong base for deeper repairs.

After cutting around the hole, add timber blocking, screw the repair panel into place, and attach mesh tape around the edges. Apply the patching compound in multiple layers, ensuring each layer dries before sanding.

Repairing water-damaged or crumbly plaster

For water-damaged or crumbly plaster, Gyprock CSR Base Coat 45 is the best product. This hard-setting base coat plaster bonds well to damaged surfaces and provides a durable repair.

First remove any loose plaster and seal stains if necessary. Then apply the new plaster in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry before continuing.

Repairing a rough or uneven surface

If you're looking to smooth out a rough or uneven surface before painting, Gyprock CSR Less Mess Topping Compound is the ideal product. This topping compound helps create a smooth finish, perfect for preparing old textured walls or uneven surfaces.

Apply the compound in thin coats using a trowel, allow each coat to dry, and then lightly sand to achieve a seamless surface ready for painting.

Tips for applying plaster

Before applying plaster, ensure the area is clean and free of dust or debris. This helps the plaster adhere better.

For a better finish, apply plaster in thin layers to prevent cracking and shrinkage. Allow each layer to dry properly before sanding or applying additional coats. This will ensure a smoother, more even result.

A wide plaster trowel is essential for achieving a smooth finish. Avoid leaving sharp edges or lines between swipes.

After the plaster has dried, sand it lightly to blend it seamlessly with the surrounding wall. Once the plaster is dry and smooth, run your hand over the surface to check for imperfections. If necessary, apply a second thin coat, sand again, and ensure the surface is perfectly smooth.

Before painting, use a primer to help the paint adhere evenly and to achieve a professional finish.
