Does anyone have any good hacks for making quick and easy custom-sized doors, jams and mouldings, preferably with recycled materials?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @ilohi. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about constructing a door.
Did you have a specific door in mind? If you could share some images with us, that would help provide more context. Let me know if you need a hand uploading them.
It’s worth noting that doors are actually quite budget-friendly, and in many cases, a new door may cost less than purchasing all the materials to make one from scratch. That said, if you're keen to build your own, a basic door is typically constructed using a timber frame with a panel insert, while a door jamb consists of three timber pieces forming the frame that the door sits within.
What recycled materials do you have available? The materials you use will influence the best construction method for your project.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mitchell,
See the attached photo.
I would like to install a bifold door that opens to the left of the photo (on the side where the clock is located).
The opening is 88cm wide by 240cm (wall thickness is 9.5cm), and unfortunately the fire detector alarm sits slightly inside the opening on the ceiling.
I think I probably need to create a door jam frame and possibly add a panel above the door to hang the bifolds from and/or just create an enclosed space for the hallway behind. I currently have a brown roman blind hanging there as a temporary measure as you can see in the photo, which is not ideal because it has been known to come loose and fall down a couple of times.
I would like to enclose the space so that I can isolate the bedroom areas which can be air conditioned from the dining area in the front of the photo.
Regards,
Hi @ilohi,
You'll need to install a bulkhead above the door height of 2040mm to enclose the space properly. This can be done using structural pine to create a sturdy frame, which is then covered with plasterboard for a seamless finish.
For the doorway itself, you'll need to install a door jamb that is spaced to fit a 770mm bi-fold door. An 820mm door would be too wide for your 880mm opening, as you need to account for the door jambs on either side. Once the jamb is in place, you can fit your bi-fold door and then bring the plasterboard right up to the jamb to complete the enclosure.
