How to build a floating shelf to support 60kg?
Hi Workshop team
I want to install shelves that will hold LP vinyl records and books and was thinking of this product primarily for the shelf depth: https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-1200-x-405mm-18mm-timber-panel-spotted-gum-fj-laminated_p020299...
Approx 200 LP's can fit on the full width of a 1200mm shelf, which would be about 60kg's.
What is the maximum weight this shelf could hold? How many brackets should I use? I will be fixing the shelf to wall studs and not worried about hidden brackets, but open to suggestions on the types of brackets.
Is this project too heavy for these shelves?
Thanks

Re: How to build a floating shelf to support 60kg?
Hello @bvw
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us and thank you for sharing your question about installing a floating shelf.
The Specrite 1200 x 405mm 18mm Timber Panel Spotted Gum FJ Laminated should be strong enough to carry 60kg as a spread weight. It's the brackets that will need to hold the entire shelf up.
I suggest looking at the following brackets:
- Carinya 300 x 300 x 25 x 3.5mm Stayed Straight Bracket - single - Black ( weight rating 125kg )
- Carinya 400 x 350 x 30 x 4mm Heavy Duty Stayed Twisted Bracket - single-galvanised ( weight rating 300kg )
- Carinya 300 x 300 x 25 x 2mm Euro Bracket - single - Satin Black ( weight rating 100kg )
I suggest a minimum of three brackets to hold the entire weight of the shelf and items on it. I suggest using the largest gauge screws that will fit in the brackets such as the Zenith 10G x 75mm Countersunk Rib Head Chipboard Screws. For the shelf itself, I propose using the Zenith 8G x 20mm Countersunk Rib Head Chipboard Screws - 45 Pack.
Please remember to wear safety equipment such as gloves, goggles and a dust mask when cutting timber and working on your shelf.
Here is a handy step-by-step guide:
