Any tips for choosing and using spray paint for the first time? (Laptop decoration)

For my first DIY project I’ve decided to try to spray paint several laptops after disassembling them. I’m really conscious of the safety concerns and I was hoping someone could explain what kind of protection would I need? Googling has only increased confusion and I don’t want to endanger myself or others.

My current plan is to purchase extra fine sanding paper to use on the plastic or metal lids, white spray primer, a coloured spray paint (such as light pink or mint green), followed by a clear varnish.

This could be really stupid for all I know. I have never spray painted ever, so any advice or input is hugely appreciated!

Thanks

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Jazzy15. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about spray painting.

Congratulations on embarking on your journey into the world of D.I.Y.!

Please be aware that whenever disassembling electronics that have been recently turned on, there is a possibility that the internal capacitors can still be holding charge. This is a safety concern as it can lead to an electrical shock if you contact the capacitor. If you are not familiar with disassembling electronics, I encourage you to seek the assistance of a qualified professional.

When spray painting, it's important to wear the required personal protective equipment. A respirator suitable for organic vapour protection is essential. You should also wear gloves, a long-sleeved shirt and pants and enclosed footwear to protect your skin from solvents that can cause skin irritation—also, safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from paint splatters. It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and make sure to work in a well-ventilated area to reduce exposure to fumes.

Our range of White Knight Squirts spray paints are the best choice for plastics. White Knight 310g Clear Gloss Squirts Spray Paint can be used to protect your coating.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
