Measuring is often the first step in a project and accuracy can be vital. Accurate measurements can help you determine project feasibility as well as what materials you need and how much it is going to cost.

 

There are different measuring tools to use according to your project. Using the right tool will make it quick and easy to get precise measurements.

 

Tape measure.pngTape measure

 

What: A tape measure is the first tool that everyone thinks of when they need to measure something. They come in various shapes, sizes and lengths to suit a variety of situations and personal preferences.

  

Why: Tape measures are versatile, easy to use and portable, making them suitable for a wide range of tasks.

 

Perfect for: General construction, home improvement projects, repairs and restoration, and any task requiring measurement of linear distances.

 

Tips for selecting and using a tape measure:

 

  • Choose a tape measure with a sturdy case and a lock mechanism to keep the tape extended

 

  • Use the hook at the end of the tape to measure accurately from the edge of an object

 

  • The hook on the tape measure is slightly loose to ensure consistent measurements whether you hook it onto something or push it against something.

What: Folding rulers are rigid measuring sticks that you can fold into a compact size. When fully opened, they typically extend to a fixed length.

 

Why: Folding rulers provide rigidity and stability, making them ideal for measuring straight lines on flat surfaces. They excel in tight spaces where a tape measure is too bulky and can serve as temporary spacers by folding to different thicknesses.
