An affordable and maintenance-free house number planter using recycled timber and faux plants.

The project

I found some old wood from a playhouse and a flower bed and decided to make a house number planter that I keep seeing online.

By using faux plants from Bunnings, I didn’t have to create a soil bed so it was super easy to make.

I started by gluing together these panels to make a backing plate.

After removing excess glue with a chisel, I glued two pieces of old hardwood to the front and drilled holes into the top to hold the faux plants.

Added our door number and ta-da!

We'd love to assist you with the project, so please feel free to ask any questions you might have. I'm sure @craftyhopper will be eager to give you a hand.

There're plenty of free pallets available at our stores if you're going for this rustic look. They're marvellous to work with, and the distressed nature of their appearance is quite hard to achieve with dressed timber.

For a zero maintenance option, consider air plants. They require no soil and get moisture from the air and an occasional spritz from a spray bottle. They can also be conveniently hot glued in place.

I'm on standby if you get stuck and can't wait to see your real succulent version.
