What soil to mimic the desert?

What soil to mimic the desert?

Hi,

Odd question but I have built an outdoor enclosure for a bearded dragon and now I need to try and replicate his natural habitat. I'm looking for a soil that resembles the dirt found in the outback. Something with clay so that he can dig and tunnel if he wishes. Something that can sustain bioactive clean up bugs (e.g isopods and springtails) and edible plants (leafy greens, succulents etc) I have no idea where to start! Any suggestions?

Re: Soil to mimic the desert?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, @Megan4! It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating an outdoor enclosure.

To replicate the natural habitat of your bearded dragon, it’s essential to consider both the composition of the soil and the environment you want to create.

Fortunately, we supply Red Desert Sand Reptile Substrate 20kg, which would be perfect for your project. It's all-natural, sourced from central Australia and is perfect for digging and burrowing.

As for plants, consider using hardy succulents and drought-tolerant grasses, which can thrive in a desert-like environment. Some Bioscape rocks and river gravel would be lovely finishing touches to the area.

It might also be beneficial to speak with reptile specialists who have experience in creating bioactive terrariums. They could provide additional insights into achieving the best habitat for your bearded dragon.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
