Where to find nut and post devices?

can somebody advise me, are these nut and post devices available as "off the shelf" items?   And where?

In howto videos, it seems most people make their own. Screenshot_20210725-192604_YouTube.jpg

Re: nut and post devices

Hello @raymondo

Thank you for sharing your question about the nut and post device.

The hole you see on the side of the Hex Nut Coupler is called a witness or inspection hole. The witness hole allows the builder to confirm that the Threaded Rods are connected together properly. I'm sorry but this type of coupler is not available at the store. You will have to purchase this coupler from a dedicated nut and bolt shop.

The photo would indicate that a short steel rod has been inserted into the inspection hole to allow the person to turn the nut without using a tool. Would it be possible for you to give us a few more details about this nut and post? Is it a tool? What is it used for? Has it been modified to be used for a special purpose?

Let me tag our experienced members @TedBear and @JDE and ask if they have seen this type of nut and post device?

If you need more advice or information, please let us know.

Re: nut and post devices

Thanks for that Eric.

I would think nut and post devices are common. Found on small G Clamps, corner clamps, and even the basic bench vice uses a kind of nut and post to wind.

I'm looking to make a simple jig, to hold timber while engraving. Based on something like a drill press vice, which also tend to use a nut and post type winder to tighten.

All we're doing is pushing against something to keep it in place.

Re: nut and post devices

Hello @raymondo

Thanks for showing us the link. I saw the Pinnacle 3/4" Zinc Plated Hex Coupler but was not sure if that was the size you needed. I spoke to our tool specialist in the area, I'm sorry but he could not give me a supplier that provided such an item that looked like your picture. Would you be able to make one if you had a drill press? Perhaps a local machine shop in your area may have some Hex Couplers already pre-drilled? I totally agree that you see these items on most vises and clamps. If you happen to find one please keep us updated. I'm sure our members would appreciate the information.
