What solvent will remove contact adhesive.

I am replacing old foam back material stuck to a fibreglass object. What solvent can I use to remove the original contact adhesive. I have already removed the fabric leaving the old glue.

Re: What solvent will remove contact adhesive.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @rhmeyers. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing contact adhesive.

To remove contact adhesive from fibreglass surfaces, acetone should be an effective solvent, but it’s important to approach its use with caution. Before applying acetone, it’s wise to test it on a small, hidden area of the fibreglass to ensure it won’t cause any discolouration or damage. Once you’ve confirmed that the solvent is safe to use, dampen a cloth or sponge with acetone, ensuring it’s not soaking wet. Gently rub the adhesive, giving it time to soften and break down. After allowing the acetone to sit for a few minutes, you should be able to use a scraper or cloth to lift off the softened adhesive.

Once the adhesive is removed, wipe the fibreglass with a clean cloth dampened with water to get rid of any remaining acetone residue. Allow the surface to air dry completely. It’s important to follow safety precautions when working with acetone, as it is a potent chemical. Always wear gloves to protect your skin, safety glasses to shield your eyes from splashes, and a mask or respirator if you are working in a space with limited ventilation.

If you prefer not to use acetone, you can try alternatives like mineral/white spirits or citrus-based adhesive removers, though they may not be as effective on more stubborn adhesives. Always refer to the safety instructions provided by the product manufacturer, and consider using a gentler solvent if you’re concerned about the fibreglass surface.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
