Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Many Bunnings stores offer a timber cutting service to help you get your wood home and get started on your project.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our timber cutting service to help Bunnings Workshop members. 

What type of cuts can be done at a Bunnings store?

Bunnings stores typically have two types of saws for timber cutting.  

• Docking saw - used to cut long lengths of timber down to size. The machine can cut across the length of timber at a 90-degree angle. Examples of products that can be cut on a docking saw include Pine framing, MDF mouldings, Pine mouldings, Tasmanian Oak mouldings, Merbau decking and Pine decking.   

• Panel saw – used to cut large sheet materials into smaller rectangular sections and pieces. The machine is capable of both horizontal and vertical cuts on most of our board products. Some examples of products that can be cut using a panel saw include Melamine, Plywood and MDF.   

Is this service available at my local Bunnings?

You can check whether the timber cutting service is available at a nearby store by visiting the Bunnings website. Here’s how:  

• Mobile device - Select your nearest store and then click on your store's name on the top left of the screen. This will take you to your store's information page, including details about what services they offer
  
  
• Desktop computer - Type the nearest store's name in the change store drop-down and then click on store details. This will take you to your store's information page, including details on what services they offer.

Can I bring my own piece of timber to be cut?

Due to the many variables associated with timber products, we can only cut products purchased from our stores.

When is the best time to visit a store for timber cutting?

Visiting at a quieter time will ensure faster service. It's best to avoid weekends and public holidays as many other D.I.Y. enthusiasts will also be looking to build their own projects.

What if I want to do the cutting at home?

Knowing what saw to use and how to use it is the key to success. Here are some useful guides to get you started:

What if I can't get my timber home? 

We offer a number of options to get your products home safely. You can use our free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. If you need more time you can also hire a trailer, a ute or a van to suit your needs. We also offer a comprehensive delivery service to assist you in getting your purchases home. Most stores offer same day or next day service. Please contact your nearest store for details.

Update 14/08/2024: The Bunnings team have provided the following information on our cutting service.

• Cuts to timber and panels boards are rounded up off to 100mm increments. We are unable to do precision cuts.
  
  
• Minimum length of cut timber is 600mm

• Customer are required to purchase an remaining offcuts measuring less than 1800mm

• Multiple timber cuts may incur a charge of $1 per cut.

We cut both H3 and H4-treated Pine, @Noyade - anything from framing timber right up to sleepers. We can't cut the round logs though.

You may remember an off-line conversation we had a while back about my local store 'unable' ("we don't cut treated pine") to cut a length of H4 in half.

Purely to fit in the car.

So I rang them an hour ago - based on what you say above.

I was told they will cut H3 - but not H4.

@MitchellMc suggestion to buy a shot handsaw is an ideal solution and will come in handy to have in your tool kit.

Hi @simonmcg 

Anywhere else you take the timber to be cut will incur a charge per cut. I would consider @JacobZ suggestion to buy a circular saw and use a straight edge to make the cuts yourself. It's a little bit of effort to set the straight edge up, but it's accurate and easy to do. Please refer two photos below. This was a setup to trim a door, but the process he explained is the same.

As I've only ever required a cut like this once in my 60 years, I'm going to see if I can get the plywood cut elsewhere.

Do you by any chance know where, apart from Bunnings, I can get the plywood cut?

I don't mind paying a few dollars for a one-off job like this.

Hi @simonmcg 

It will take a bit of phoning about as most timber yards only do docking cuts. In other words use a mite saw to cut long timbers to length. Cutting sheets of plywood require a more specialised saw which timber yards don't have. Try Googling "local timber cutting services" However possibly the easiest solution would be to enlist a local handyman as they would be easily able to provide this service for you at home.

I am planning to make a bookshelf, I live in an apartment and don't have the tools to cut a melamine sheet 2 metres long x 45cm wide, cut into 15cm wide lengths.
