Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Many Bunnings stores offer a timber cutting service to help you get your wood home and get started on your project.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our timber cutting service to help Bunnings Workshop members.

What type of cuts can be done at a Bunnings store?

Bunnings stores typically have two types of saws for timber cutting.

  • Panel saw – used to cut large sheet materials into smaller rectangular sections and pieces. The machine is capable of both horizontal and vertical cuts on most of our board products. Some examples of products that can be cut using a panel saw include MelaminePlywood and MDF.

Is this service available at my local Bunnings?

You can check whether the timber cutting service is available at a nearby store by visiting the Bunnings website. Here’s how:

  • Mobile device - Select your nearest store and then click on your store's name on the top left of the screen. This will take you to your store's information page, including details about what services they offer

  • Desktop computer - Type the nearest store's name in the change store drop-down and then click on store details. This will take you to your store's information page, including details on what services they offer.

Can I bring my own piece of timber to be cut?

Due to the many variables associated with timber products, we can only cut products purchased from our stores.

When is the best time to visit a store for timber cutting?

Visiting at a quieter time will ensure faster service. It's best to avoid weekends and public holidays as many other D.I.Y. enthusiasts will also be looking to build their own projects.

What if I want to do the cutting at home?

Knowing what saw to use and how to use it is the key to success. Here are some useful guides to get you started:

What if I can't get my timber home?

We offer a number of options to get your products home safely. You can use our free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. If you need more time you can also hire a trailer, a ute or a van to suit your needs. We also offer a comprehensive delivery service to assist you in getting your purchases home. Most stores offer same day or next day service. Please contact your nearest store for details.

Update 14/08/2024: The Bunnings team have provided the following information on our cutting service.

  • Cuts to timber and panels boards are rounded up off to 100mm increments. We are unable to do precision cuts.

  • Minimum length of cut timber is 600mm

  • Customer are required to purchase an remaining offcuts measuring less than 1800mm

  • Multiple timber cuts may incur a charge of $1 per cut.

As always, our helpful members are ready to assist with any questions you have on completing precision cuts for your D.I.Y. projects at home.

Please feel free to let me know if you have further questions about our helpful timber cutting service.

Re: Cutting wood to size

Hello @Shorethommo

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us.

I'm sorry the 150mm cut is too small for the shop saws to cut. Please note that the shop saws are not built for precision cutting and cutting drift can go as wide as wide as 5mm depending on the material being cut.  I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to choose the right power saw for the job by @Adam_W. Using a power saw will enable you to cut the timber pieces to the size that you need.

I also suggest having a look at these guides:

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and an appropriate mask when working on your project.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

16mm x 3mm 3m Aluminium Flat Bar - can I cut at store in half?

I plan to buy two "Metal Mate 16 x 3mm 3m Aluminium Flat Bar" at the Marsden Park store. I need to cut them in half, so they can fit my car (and that's also the size I need). I know the store offers free timber cut. Can I use that for this?

Re: 16mm x 3mm 3m Aluminium Flat Bar - can I cut at store in half?

Hello @sebastian_e

Thanks for sharing your question regarding the Metal mate bar. I'm sorry but the shop saws do not cut metal.

However, if you have a hack saw available to you it will be enough to cut the bar in half. If you can't source one from friends and family, I suggest going to the tool shop and purchasing a Trojan 300mm Tubular Hack Saw. This will enable you to cut PVC and soft metals such as the aluminium bar. Plus, it is a handy addition to your D.I.Y. tool kit.

Can you please tell us what project you are working on? I'm sure our members would be keen to see what you are building.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thank you @EricL

I have, but I'm not sure if there is a bench/place I can use at the Marsden Park store. Parking lot, maybe?

bunnings cut shop service - 5 cuts per person limit??

When did Bunnings start imposing a "5 cuts per person" and "we don't do project cuts" policy? I can't see this anywhere on their website.

Re: bunnings cut shop service - 5 cuts per person limit??

Hi  @rm10

I dont think that is some  sort of official rule bunnings  has. I understand its not bunnings  job to cut up all your projects for you to size. But some people  need 8 cuts some need none so for the sake of a bit of customer service whats  3 more cuts even at busy times.  I go by an old rule that you look after the customers you have before you try looking after  others as your service standard  will fall.

Maybe  ask the store manager whats the go or

Simply take 3 people in with you ie  15 cuts.

Re: which sydney stores have a panel saw fro cutting sheeets of plywood?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @eianm. It's great to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about our cutting service.

The vast majority of our Sydney stores, as well as all the larger stores, have a panel saw for cutting sheets. There is a possibility that a few of the smaller stores do not have this service available. Rather than list all the stores with a panel saw, it might be easiest if you let me know your location, and I can point you to the closest store with a panel saw.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
