Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Many Bunnings stores offer a timber cutting service to help you get your wood home and get started on your project.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our timber cutting service to help Bunnings Workshop members.

What type of cuts can be done at a Bunnings store?

Bunnings stores typically have two types of saws for timber cutting.

  • Panel saw – used to cut large sheet materials into smaller rectangular sections and pieces. The machine is capable of both horizontal and vertical cuts on most of our board products. Some examples of products that can be cut using a panel saw include MelaminePlywood and MDF.

Is this service available at my local Bunnings?

You can check whether the timber cutting service is available at a nearby store by visiting the Bunnings website. Here’s how:

  • Mobile device - Select your nearest store and then click on your store's name on the top left of the screen. This will take you to your store's information page, including details about what services they offer

  • Desktop computer - Type the nearest store's name in the change store drop-down and then click on store details. This will take you to your store's information page, including details on what services they offer.

Can I bring my own piece of timber to be cut?

Due to the many variables associated with timber products, we can only cut products purchased from our stores.

When is the best time to visit a store for timber cutting?

Visiting at a quieter time will ensure faster service. It's best to avoid weekends and public holidays as many other D.I.Y. enthusiasts will also be looking to build their own projects.

What if I want to do the cutting at home?

Knowing what saw to use and how to use it is the key to success. Here are some useful guides to get you started:

What if I can't get my timber home?

We offer a number of options to get your products home safely. You can use our free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. If you need more time you can also hire a trailer, a ute or a van to suit your needs. We also offer a comprehensive delivery service to assist you in getting your purchases home. Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hi, are the free cuts per timber item, or per total purchase? Thanks

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hello @jbie

Thanks for sharing your question about timber cuts. The general rule is that the first cut for the panel saw is free and any succeeding cut after that is charged 1$ per additional cut. Whereas with the docking saw, the first two cuts are free and any succeeding cut after that is .50 cents per additional cut. Therefore the cuts are generally processed on the total purchase.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Cutting panels

I'm going to buy 1 x 2400 x 1200 x 18mm MDF and 1 x 1200 x 450 x 12mm MDF sheets

Can I have them cut exactly to my specification if I supply precise panel sizes?

Re: Cutting panels

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @BillM2. It's a pleasure to have you join us and many thanks for your question about our timber-cutting service.

We can certainly cut those boards up for you, but it's not a precision cutting service. There can be a +/-3mm margin of error to the cuts. Typically, they are pretty close, though. Also, because of safety requirements, there's a limit to how small we can cut the panels. Anything under 400mm is generally too small as the machines are designed to cut boards down to fit in a vehicle.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Can a length of melamine particle board be cut accurately to size for internal kitchen cabinet shelves by store staff?

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @sheilad. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about our cutting service.

Our in-store team will do their very best to cut your melamine board to an accurate size. However, it's not a precision cutting service, and there can be an unavoidable slight variance in dimensions. If you were after precise cuts, I'd recommend having the team cut the board down to fit in your vehicle and then taking your time at home to complete the project by cutting the shelves to your exact requirements with a circular saw.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hi Team,

I am planning to make a canvas frame for a art measuring 140cm*100cm. Will I be able to get the wood cut from bunnings(given I buy it from Bunnings store). Would also like to know if the wood can be cut at an 45 degree angles from the edges so that I can glue them later on.

Any inputs would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hello @abhina2211

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. Thank you for joining the discussion.

I'm sure our team will try their best to cut the panel very close to the size that you want. Please keep in mind that the saws at the shop are not made for precision cutting. Unfortunately, slight differences could crop up while the panel is being cut. I'm sorry but the panel saw can only do straight cuts.

If you need it to be very precise, I suggest having the panel cut so that it fits into your vehicle. Once it is in your work area, you can then carefully plan on cutting it to the size that you need with a circular saw.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

In Store Cutting Service

Hello,

My local Bunnings store does offer cutting of panels and timber lengths.

One question though, if I have a panel of 3mm 1200x600mm MDF and i need a section that is 1100x40mm how much will that cost given that there are 2 physical cuts that need to be made for the one piece.

Thanks

Regards

Yudi

Re: In Store Cutting Service

Hello @Yudi-M

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. Thank you for joining the discussion.

The first cut is free, any additional cuts even if it is on the same panel or sheet gets charged 1 dollar. Please keep in mind that the saws at the shop are not made for precision cutting. Unfortunately, slight differences could crop up while the panel is being cut. Because the timber piece you've chosen is so thin, I suggest cutting it with a circular saw with fine teeth instead.

The blades used on the shop saws are not designed for a fine finish. There is the possibility that the blade tips could rip through the thin MDF material and leave you with a very rough finish. I recommend speaking to your stores timber specialist and discussing with them how you want the timber cut.

If you have any other questions we can help you with, please let us know.
