Needed a new shed door, couldn't find one I liked so made my own. Made from recycled jarrah incorporating metal ties & custom made hinges & lock.
2.4m x 300mm x 75mm Jarrah boards
12mm x 50mm dowels
Galv metal tubing, flat bar, 2mm plate
M12x 100mm Galv bolts, nuts & washers
Railway sleeper spikes
Glue, silicone sealant, Tung oil
Recycled heavy duty door lock
DeWalt circular saw, router, planer, orbital sander, drill, driver, twist drills & spade bits, welder, elbow grease
Assessed & prepared timber, drilled approx. 30 corresponding dowel holes then glued/fitted dowels & clamped overnight
Planed all surfaces, routed edges, filled gaps/imperfections & applied 2 x coats of Tung Oil.
Fabricated & installed across door ties with bolts incorporating 3 custom made hinges. Fitted railway sleeper spikes, lock, handles & lock protection plates. Also installed sliding viewer.
Offered door into frame, adjusted & bolted off hinges. Applied 3 more coats of Tung Oil. Sturdy, solid & works like a dream. Total cost - materials $150.00 & 30 hrs labour.
Hi @Dusty_Boots,
Many thanks for your post and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community.
What a fantastic project.
You're not going to find too many doors sturdier than the one you've created.
I particularly like the custom-made door handle, It's extremely unique.
Keep up the good work!
Jacob
