Re: What project do you want to tackle next?

The project I am tacking this weekend is ripping off the carpet in the laundry/toilet. As far as I know there is old vinyl under the carpet and then cement. Under the carpet on the stairs is hardwood. I would like to  tile the floor and polish the stairs.

How did you go with pulling up the carpet @sj4? It's not a fun job but can be very rewarding! It would be great to see some photos of what you've done.

Re: What project do you want to tackle next?

Hi everybody,

Next project?

My life is just bouncing from one 'need' to the next.

I'm currently refurbishing a two bedroom flat that our tenants trashed - long story and it started with us giving a lower rent to a 'single' mother of two and not asking for a bond. Soon after, a male moved in with her and the rent started getting behind.

I gave them their privacy and didn't do house inspections - my fault.

Then I got an email that they were leaving and they would leave the keys in the mailbox...

When I had a look at the flat, the shower recess had been leaking (for quite some time) and the wall had rotted out and the cupboard and carpet was severely damaged.

I started in the bathroom and bedroom, fixing it all and then my wife and I decided to refurbish the lot and sell it.

We've done the shower recess and repaired the bedroom, repainted most of the flat and now we're doing a kaboodle kitchen. There were a lot of walls and doors that had been punched in, with low quality repairs - I wish they had just left them damaged as it would've been easier than repairing their repairs and painting.

It's a long slow process as both my wife and I work full time and we have a (successful) woodfired pizza catering business that we conduct on weekends.

We work on the flat when we get time.

I was doing up our own house in my spare time (big new shed - 75m2, flat in backyard 60m2, concrete and paving ~ 200m2) with an ensuite and outside entertainment area due to go in soon. I'll get back to them when I finish the flat.

Busy? Sure am, but never bored

I purchase most of our general parts and bits from bunnings with specialised bits coming from other suppliers.

I don't know if and when I'll get back to 'the workshop' and see what people have posted/replied so don't think I'm ignoring you - I just found this and saw a post from someone regarding solar collection with batteries and thought that I would throw my two bob's worth in as it isn't feasible to install batteries (yet) and explain why I don't think its worth it.

My background is electronic and mechanical engineering.

Cheers,

Kev

Re: What project do you want to tackle next?

Hi @Kev,

Welcome to Workshop. Great to have you join us. With your background I'm sure we all have much to learn from you.

I was really story to read of your flat. It's horrible when tenants don't respect their homes and leave a lot of work and expense in their wake. It sounds like you have done a lot of work. If you get a chance it would be great to see what you have achieved through all your hard work - I'm sure it could inspire other community members with their own renovation works.

I trust the community can also help inspire and inform your projects in future. Feel free to post anytime you need a hand or just want to share what you have done.

Thanks again,

Jason

Not a job I want but...

Fixing the tiles that have come off in the bathroom, my 52 years of tiling resistance is now coming to an end with my only comfort is it is only 3 tiles so far.

The lavender tiles may survive the wallpaper will one day have to go!

Re: What project do you want to tackle next?

I would like to put in a stone bench with a cut out for a sink. How do I cut the hole out ? It's a 450x300 hole in a 900x680 piece with a 50mm gap from one side?
