Starting a new project

I am about to start a new project and the timber I will be using is camphor laurel. The timber has some great colours running through it and I want to bring them out. I am looking for some tips on finishing. I do not want to use satins but enhance the colours. Is there anyone who has used camphor laurel and how did you finish it? I do not have any problems searching the net but can not find enough info to assist. "HELP"

This is the material I wll be using. The colours in the material need to be enhance, hence a good finish IMG_1458.JPGthe holes will be filled with a shellac fillerthe holes will be filled with a shellac fillerIMG_1460.JPGIMG_1461.JPG

Have you got any offcuts you can do some tests on @r23on?

Re: Starting a new project

I have a some material I can use, the material shown I am not cutting any for tests. I am looking for the best finish possible, that being a poly whip two pack or whatever gives the best result for camphor laurel

At the moment I am waiting a delivery for a filler to fill the knot holes to enhance them.

Re: Starting a new project

@r23onI'm going to ask my brother-in-law for you.
He hand-makes various musical instruments & I know he's used camphor laurel for a lot of his drums & they look awesome.
Stay tuned....

Re: Starting a new project

Hi Adam

Thanks I look forward to your reply I am alos looking at a shellac finish, prefer not to as the time need to do the job

once again thanks

Re: Starting a new project

Hi @r23on okay, chatted with my BiL and he said he uses specialist Livos KUNOS CounterTop Oil for his camphor laurel projects.
One of the main reasons he uses it, apart from finish, is that it is totally safe for contact (it's food safe). Not too sure where you buy it from (apart from on-line) but you may find a suitable substitute from other, more accessible, brands.
Hope this helps.

Re: Starting a new project

Hi Adam_W

thanks for the heads up. I have been on the web site of the supplier and is not too far from here and have looked up their other products. just waiting on them to answer a few question and hope to head over Wed

Once again thanks for the help

 Update

Adam_W I have been touch with the supplier and they have answered my questions and will head over to pick up some of the oil. On top of that I did some more research on the product and camphor laurel and many people speak of the oil and who well it works. For them the only issue is the cost to delivery.

Once again thanks for the help.
