How to protect timber door threshold?

Hi, what outdoor varnish can I use to restore the colour of the timber and protect from the harsh UV rays? What steps do I need to take before applying the varnish? Thank you.

Re: How to protect outdoor timber

Hello @redcamper

Thanks for sharing your question about your door sill. I suggest having a quick look at this discussion - How to restore timber door sill? by @vas90. There are some very good suggestions in regards to what products to use on the timber door sill. The general steps would be to sand the surface of your door sill so that all the old sealer is removed. Give the sill a good clean, you then mask off the areas that you don't want to get painted with oil. Apply the oil and wait for it to dry off and you're done.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

Thanks!

Would Gilly's Timber Oil be suitable for the door sill? I've used it before to seal merbau edging.

Re: How to protect outdoor timber

Hi @redcamper,

You can certainly use Gilly's Outdoor Furniture Alfresco Timber Oil if you've already got some lying around, but you may need to apply maintenance coats more frequently than a more hardwearing oil such as Gilly's Tung Oil.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
