How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
What is the best way to “plaster” a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock. What product/s should I use to fill and level. Is normal gyproc 45min ok? Or would I need to use a sealer or mortar first for covering the bricks. The location is internal in a living room, a kitchen and a dinning room.

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Hello @Dan4
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about plastering.
I suggest having a quick look at this discussion - How to plaster over new Gyprock plasterboard? by @siva26. You'll find a guide regarding what you'll need to do in order to plaster the Gyprock. In regards to the exposed brickwork, I suggest using Dunlop 20kg Multipurpose Acrylic Render.
If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Thanks Eric. Once I put a coat of the Dunlop acrylic render (up to 10mm as per the instructions) would I then coat the final layer with all purpose gyprock mud?
the product details for the Dunlop don’t tell me if I can sand it flat and then paint it? Would like to get a perfect finish so I can then paint.

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Hi @Dan4
This is the tricky part of rendering; You'll need to finish the surface perfectly as there will be no second chances to correct the error once the render cures. Make sure to use a rendering trowel for a perfect flat finish. Take your time and don't rush the process the surface finish can be done to a plaster like finish.

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Sorry that didn’t really answer my original question. So the brick gaps are deeper than 10. So for the next coat would I just put gyprock all purpose on top of the render to get it ready for painting? That way I can sand it. Assuming the render you can’t sand?

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Hi @Dan4,
I have a solution that is similar to @EricL's and will get you a nice smooth transition between the bricks and the existing plaster.
Use Dingo Structural Repair Mortar to fill the gaps in the brick, then use hardwall plaster mixed with hydrated lime as a topcoat over the repair mortar. The repair mortar will take up most of the space, with the hardwall plaster and hydrated lime mix acting as your topcoat that can be trowelled on smooth and then painted.
You will have some ability to sand the hardwall plaster mix, but if you can't get it perfect, you can always apply a skim coat of Gyprock CSR Less Mess Topping Compound over the top, then sand to get it perfect.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Hi @Dan4,
Just to add to the method I've mentioned above, you'll want to use Plasterboard Jointing Tape or Fibreglass Joint Tape in your hard wall plaster layer to prevent cracking from any movement.
Let me know what you think.

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Thanks for your advice. To be clear am I only using the joint tape between the brick wall join and the plaster? Or is it being imbedded all through the hard plaster?

Re: How to plaster a brick wall to tie into both exisiting plaster or new gyprock?
Hi @Dan4,
Just at the join between the brick and plaster as this is a point where two different materials meet and there is potential for slight movements.
It will add strength to a point where cracking has more potential.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
