How to fix sash windows not staying up?

How do you replace balance springs in double sash non tilting windows. The springs have come adrift from the bottom of the window frames and the attachment clips are broken or lost. How do I replace these fasteners and also the spring guide within the frame attached to the spring

Re: How to fix sash windows not staying up?

Hello @Mark_Harris

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your sash windows.

I've been looking on the Bunnings website and all I can see are the Window spiral balance sets. I'm not sure if these units can be used to retro fit your type of window. I'll be passing by the store tomorrow and I'll investigate if there any spares for a spring-loaded sash window. As soon as we have more information, well get back to you.

Thank you for your patience.

Re: How to fix sash windows not staying up?

Hello @Mark_Harris

Thank you for your patience. I've gone into the hardware isle of the store and there are springs available for your window. I suggest bringing your old set to the store so that you can compare for length and width to make sure you get the correct one. However, I could not find any of the other parts for a sash window.

I propose speaking to a builder or handy person who is familiar with traditional spring-loaded sash windows and asking them if it can be upgraded to Window spiral balance sets.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1@Nailbag and @JoeAzza for their recommendations.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Afternoon @Mark_Harris

Love the old style windows.... Just dont have any to repair so my experiance is a zero. However! I do follow a page in the Blue social media companies site called "Sydney Sash Window Factory" They have a LOT of examples of their work. They also look like the do decent repairs so maybe hit them up for parts?

Re: How to fix sash windows not staying up?

Hi @Mark_Harris , I have a sash window the springs are broken , there’s a lot of information on YouTube of how to repair them, there iare sites that supply  the replacement units, however you will need to remove the old ones and take it with you to match yours, I haven’t removed mine yet, because I can still open and close the windows, I just cut a piece of timber to hold the window open, I also installed window locks to ensue that they cannot be opened until required.

one day I will either fix it or replace the whole window.

Re: How to fix sash windows not staying up?

Hi @Mark_Harris

the sash mechanism is not spiral but spring load which are more complicated to resolve compared to traditional rope sash or spiral.

I would recommend you Google "spring sash window repairs" for your area as it needs to be handled by an experienced repairs who understands and has access to varies spring tensioners.
