Do you need to sand before painting?

Hi there,

I have recently had holes fixed and plastered. I brought undercoat and painted over the plaster. Do I need to sand before I paint? Also am I on the right track with what I have done so far

Re: painting over plaster

Hi @kyz44,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

After plastering, it is necessary to sand everything to a smooth finish to achieve a seamless look. It is generally part of a plasterer's scope of work to sand their patches, but if they haven't you should do so.

After each coat, whether it is undercoat or paint, light sanding with a sanding sponge is always a good idea. This will remove any minor imperfections and create a nice smooth surface to give you the best finish possible.

It sounds like you're definitely on the right track, but these articles are worth a read for some guidance:

Let me know if you have any further questions.
