Gday all, I’ve just started constructing the frame for a built in bbq and was wondering if Marine grade plywood would be suitable to finish off the cabinetry, as in the sides and storage cupboard doors.
I’ll be using blueboard and laying tiles for the bench top.
cheers.
Hi @Wilso88,
Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
Marine plywood would be a great option for your outdoor kitchen, but it would still need to be sealed to prevent damage from water over time.
If you were looking to keep a timber look, I'd suggest using a clear exterior varnish such as this Bondall 1L Satin Monocel Gold Marine Clear Timber Varnish.
If you wanted to paint the cabinets, any high-quality exterior paint would work fine.
Whatever coating you choose to use, you should start by giving the marine ply a sand with some 120 Grit Sandpaper to remove any contaminants that could affect the adhesion of your product and prepare the surface. Follow the instructions on your product for the best results.

Hi Jacob,
thank you for the response mate.
I’m planning the paint the cabinetry a matte black colour to match the bbq.
I appreciate the info 👍🏻
