How to repaint flaking screen door?

The paint at bottom of our screen doors is flaking off but the doors are otherwise pretty good. What’s the best way to repaint these?
Do we need to sand off all the paint from the whole door before painting?
What is the best kind of paint? And is a primer required?

Also, is it best to remove the handle before painting to avoid paint blocking the keyhole? (The condition of the handles is good enough not to repaint).

Re: Repaint flaking screen door

Hi @kh17,

To repaint your screen door effectively, you’ll need to start by removing all the flaking and delaminating paint at the bottom with a scraper or sandpaper. It’s essential to assess the paint further up to determine if it’s firmly adhered. Given that the compromised lower section indicates poor adhesion, it would be best to strip all the paint from the door to ensure a smooth, uniform finish. This will help prevent any future peeling or flaking.

For the best results, I recommend using Dulux Epoxy Enamel paints, which provide a tough, durable finish ideal for high-traffic areas like doors. This paint is resistant to chipping and fading, making it suitable for external applications. You’ll want to use a suitable primer, especially if the door is aluminium. Dulux's Metal Primer is an excellent choice for this type of surface, ensuring strong adhesion for the topcoat.

Regarding the door handle, it’s a good idea to remove it before painting. This will prevent any paint from blocking the keyhole and allow you to achieve a neater finish around that area. After preparing the door and applying the primer and paint, reattach the handle.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
