What rat poison is safe for cats?

Hi l want to use Rat poison but worried about secondary poisoning if my cats eat a dead poisoned rat , l tried " Ratsack NAturals' but havent found it very effective so far, perhaps they have to eat alot of it over several days to be effective. Is there another rat posion that might be stronger or more effective that l can buy that is also safe for secondary poisoning of pets ? l think l read ' RATSACK DOUBLE STENGHT " is safe for cats with secodary poisoning, is that True  , and would that ratsack double stenght be more effective then ratsack naturals

Re: Safe RAT POSION for Cats

It’s great to hear you’re considering the safety of your cats while dealing with a rat issue, @Cranswick. Ratsak Naturals is the safest options for controlling rats, as it’s designed to remove the risk of secondary poisoning in pets. However, if you’re not seeing results with Ratsak Naturals, it’s possible that the rats in your area have other food sources that are more appealing to them.

You might want to check if any neighbours have chickens or other animals whose feed is easily accessible. This could attract the rats away from the bait. If they’re finding better food options, they may not be inclined to eat the bait you’ve set out.

As for the effectiveness of Ratsak Naturals, it works by requiring the rats to consume a sufficient amount over several days before it takes effect. If the rats aren’t eating it consistently, it may not achieve the desired result.

Ratsak Double Strength is designed to be a stronger alternative, but it’s important to note that it only lowers the risk of secondary poisoning to non-target animals compared to 2nd gen rodenticides and does not eliminate it like the Naturals version.

If you’re looking for an effective solution, you might also consider employing traps as an additional strategy. They can be an immediate method for reducing the rat population while ensuring the safety of your pets.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Safe RAT POSION for Cats

Thanks , what are the most effective traps for rats, are the traps you sell with rats get an electric shock the most effective and what is the best bait to use to get them in the trap

Re: Safe RAT POSION for Cats

There are plenty of options out there, @Cranswick, which can make it hard to choose. I'm a bit old school and always go for a wooden rat trap. The key to them being effective is to set the trigger as lightly as possible, so even a slight touch sets it off. Another method is not to set it for the first two nights so the rats become accustomed to running up and taking the bait from it. On the third night, set it.

If you have trouble setting old-style rat traps, the RATSAK Max Strength Rat Trap's easy-to-set operation will eliminate that issue.

The best bait for a rat trap includes foods that are high in protein and fat. Common options are peanut butter, dried fruit, bacon, or nuts. Peanut butter is particularly effective due to its strong smell and sticky texture, which makes it hard for the rats to take without triggering the trap.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Re: Safe RAT POSION for Cats

Thanks but the electronic zapper trap ( below) seems easier to use , would that be as equally as effective as the ratscak max strenght trap , which do you think would give the best result or would both be equal?

Re: Safe RAT POSION for Cats

Hi @Cranswick,

I haven't personally tried that trap, so I have no firsthand experience. However, the reviews on the Bunnings webpage sound very promising. "Caught 12 rats in the first 5 days."

Re: Safe RAT POSION for Cats

l was also considering Contrac BLox posion, l heard its good and suposed to be safe for cats in secondary poisoning  if they eat an affected rat.

Probably not as safe as Naturals but , BUT Do you think they are correct that it would be safe if one of my cats ate a posioned rat that ate contac blox

Re: Safe RAT POSION for Cats

Hello @Cranswick

I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with Contrac and Bromadiolone poisons you've mentioned. I believe you should use a non-poisonous trap such as The Big Cheese Electronic Mouse Killer or similar if you are worried about your pet cats ingesting a poisoned rat. There are a few electric models you can choose from and are designed to catch rats and mice. I suggest visiting your local store and see which one suits your needs.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
