How to repaint balustrading on verandah?
Hey,
we have this hand rail/fence on our verandah that we’d like to re paint to vivid white. Handrail will stay stained (needs re doing)
I have a ozito paint spray machine that I thought would be easy to apply (was going to hang the panels in a second hand tent to spray)
Or would you recommend using roller/brush?
Other questions are -
Should I sand the current colour back?
should I use a rust/primer?
any feedback is appreciated:)

Re: steps to re paint balcony fence panels
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @hjmeyers. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting balustrading.
That appears to be a Colorbond or powder-coated balustrade. I suggest you check by running your fingers over it to ensure it's not powdery. If it leaves black powder on your fingertips you need to give it a good scrub down with a scourer and Sugar Soap. Flush the railing with free water to remove residue and leave to dry. You can then paint it with your sprayer and White Knight Rust Guard Gloss White Epoxy Enamel Paint. There is no primer required. See details on the can for sprayer thinning. I suggest the epoxy enamel instead of a standard water-based exterior paint as it's substantially harder wearing. The timber post can be painted with standard exterior paint, such as Dulux Weathershield. Please note that the white epoxy paint might be a slightly different shade of white to vivid white in exterior paint.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: steps to re paint balcony fence panels
Hi @hjmeyers
Your metal works to be in very good condition so no remidial action required ie rust conversion etc.
A quick light sand 1200 gt paper will help clean any grim off for better paint adheseion.
However As you are painting white on a dark surface I will recommend 2 coats of a light or white primer to really bring out your vivid white top coat. best looks. A dark under coat will effect the colour negativly other wise
Dulux 1Step Prep Primer, Sealer & Undercoat 1L I/N: 1370232
$49.90
Yes you can spray paint or small roller just fully mask your area 100% But using a sprayer properly on the outside balcony areas might be a challenge. And a small roller might work best here.

Re: steps to re paint balcony fence panels
Just to clarify @Jewelleryrescue's advice, that would be for under a water-based acrylic exterior paint, if you chose to go that route. The epoxy enamel I've suggested does not require and will not function correctly over that undercoat.

Re: steps to re paint balcony fence panels
Afternoon @hjmeyers
Your question caught my eyes, I was watching a video on someone painting their timber handrail (as you do) and she used a sock on her hand! Seriously a good idea tho havnt been able to test it as I dont have that type of handrails lol
So a waterproof glove, then a sock (not sure of the material is all) and then you rubbed your hands around the banners. Id follow @MitchellMc 's suggestions about what type of paint ect as I usually deal with oil outside.
I think her name was "Emma" and she is on facebook/insta type deal. Can find it if you are interested.
BTW would love to see how whatever way you choose comes up. Always interesting to see projects
