How to repaint a gable?
First time repainting the gable and after some advice😢😂:
Hi everyone, the paint is peeled off due to lack of previous owner's maintenance. Could anyone share what exactly I need to do step by step to repaint it?
If I cut off small smaple from the gable for tinting wont it be risky that I might damage this gable if I chip too much? if its an issue, I actually dont mind painting it with a similar color. So I should show the counter a photo of my gable?
(I have actually enquired a few roofers / painters, But they cant. They cant do it as they regard this as a small job unless substantial price is paid for their time.)
So this is something I will do myself. I am young and fit and I have a mate to look out for me, so I could go to the roof to repaint it myself. But I am clueless as to where to begin with.
Thank you for any advice!

Re: How to repaint a gable?
Hello @ivanptr
Thank you for sharing your question about repainting your gable. You are correct the steps you took to get a sample and a similar shade of paint are the same. You must bring a piece of flaking paint at least the size of a ten-cent coin to the paint specialist at the store for a paint match. But this time you must tell him it is for exterior use. He will then make recommendations on which one to use.
The steps you took to paint the inside wall will be the same when you paint your gable. You need to cover your roof so that it will not get paint splatter. You will need to sand your gable to remove the old paint. You must clean it of dust and debris so that it is ready for painting.
Because you are working on your roof I suggest renting a roofing harness to keep you safe. Please take all necessary safety measures when working at height.
If you need more information please let us know.

Re: How to repaint a gable?
Hi @EricL , What tool should we use to sand the gable? Can it be done by rubbing the gable with sand paper?

Re: How to repaint a gable?
Hello @ivanptr
Using sandpaper is the correct tool to remove old flaking paint from the gable. You can also use 100mm Sharp Edge Paint Scraper to remove tough flakes. Please make sure to use a sanding block so that you get a uniform flat finish. We would love to see the gable once you have repainted it.
Please keep us updated.

Re: How to repaint a gable?
Hi @EricL ,
In regard to the process of removing old paint, are you referring to flakes of the exterior layer of paint that looks like loose and can be peeled off?
If some parts of the gable are intact with the old paint , do we still need to remove them?
Or can we just clean these intact old paint with sugar soap, sand the surface a bit, and applying new paint "over" the old paint?

Re: How to repaint a gable?
Hello @ivanptr
You are correct! You must remove all the loose flaking paint. But the paint that is very hard to remove you can leave alone. You can just sand those bits and make sure that they are flat and level. The steps are to make sure that there are no more loose paint flakes. Old paint that is still strongly attached can be sanded. The final step is to wash with sugar soap to make sure it is all clean.
Please make sure that the area is totally dry before you begin painting.
Please be safe when working at height and keep us updated with your progress.

Re: How to repaint a gable?
Thanks @EricL , it feels great to achieve something on our own. Especially we are in a time of booming building industry and the painters in our area are mostly fully booked and dont really want to accept small jobs. Really appreicate your step by step guidance and straightforward product recommendation saving us time on deciding which product is suitable for us.
It took us a week due to the weather we had to make sure the timber is dried before putting paint on it.
Gable restored!
