Hi there? Does anyone have any advice on how to go about pain ting a terracotta roof? Our roof is 50 years old and needs love.
Hi @alla,
Thank you for your question about painting terracotta roof tiles.
Unfortunately, due to the porous nature of terracotta tiles, paint does not adhere well to them. Painting them may give you some improvement, but the cost to do it would be quite high and would not last particularly long.
Restoring the existing tiles would be a better approach than repainting as this will bring them back to their former glory and would last a great deal longer. This would involve cleaning the tiles, replacing any broken or damaged tiles, repointing and possibly sealing them.
Due to the high-risk nature of any work on a roof, my suggestion would be to contact a roof restoration specialist in your area who will be able to offer advice on the direction to take and quote on the job.
You might like to use a service such as HiPages or True Local to find someone close to you.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Jacob, thank you for replying I appreciate it.
However the problem is that we don’t want the terracotta colour. As lovely as terracotta roofs may be in Europe, they don’t suit our 1970s built house. It’s such a dated property, we want to give it a fresh look. I have read that it’s a difficult job but that you can get specialised paint to get the job done, so I wondered if anyone here had down it before.
And never fear, we will be hiring a professional to do it.
Thank you.
Hi @alla,
Hiope you are doing well.
Please let us know how you go with the professionals. I'm sure community members who also have a terracotta roof will be keen to see the transformation if you proceed.
Thanks,
Jason
