How to move gate hinge so latch reaches strike plate?

Hi, I have a side gate where the latch doesn't reach the strike plate. Easiest fix seems to be to add something behind the hinges to move the gate over slightly. Only needs about 1cm. Plate measures approx 4 x 10.5cm. What would be the best product for this? I only have limited tools at home so ideally not too much cutting etc. Thanks!

Re: Gate hinge

Hi @jibs2,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

I'd suggest using some window packers to pack out behind the hinges. You can then just screw straight through them back into the existing holes.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Gate hinge

Thanks for the reply and suggestion of using window packers.
I understand these are a horseshoe shape so you can screw down the middle, where there is no plastic.

How would you anticipate it would work in this scenario where the screws are on the sides of the hinge? Would the plastic not get in the way?

Re: Gate hinge

Hi @jibs2,

I'd suggest instead to use the Titan 10 x 72 x 100 mm Black Shim Packing. Mark the location of the screws on it and pre-drill it to accommodate them. That way, you'll have a solid piece of plastic behind the hinge. You could use the packers, but due to their design, I don't feel it will be as solid of an installation as the shim.
