How to maintain wooden birdhouse?

1000076593.jpg

Looking for advice for how to best protect this wooden birdhouse. It's fixed in the yard about 6ft off the ground. I've had the property for about 2yrs and notice that the bird house has looked very weathered during that time. The house part seems to be made of very thin wood so I'm a bit worried about trying too much.

Would the right approach be to sand it and then try to paint it with something clear to seal it? I appreciate any advice to save my birdhouse!

Hi @Katekatekate,

Welcome to the community. We're pleased to have you join us.

In the previous discussion What timber and finish for an outdoor hanging birdhouse? one of our resident Bunnings D.I.Y. experts Eric suggested using either tung oil or linseed oil on the birdhouse.

Let me also tag @JoeAzza who has previously built a birdhouse.

Re: How to maintain wooden birdhouse?

Hello @Katekatekate

Just to add to the suggestions made, I recommend sanding the surface of the bird house to remove the old surface sealer that was placed on it. It's important that all of it be removed so that the new seal can be absorbed properly by the timber. Failure to sand the surface will result in any sealer being painted on to the unsanded surface to peel. I propose investing in a detail sander to expedite the sanding process.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
