How best to colour and protect timber retaining wall?

I believe this is treated pine wood. We've got this put in just a month ago. Could you please advise what type of paint is suitable to paint over the timber so that it lasts longer. I prefer a darker colour. Thanks IMG_4895 (1).jpegThanks

Hello @swong1

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about protecting your retaining wall.

I recommend having a look at these discussions - How to stain treated sleepers for raised garden bed? by @Michael-T and How best to colour AND protect treated pine retaining walls? by @heykrazi. Both of these discussions contain excellent tips and recommendations on how to prepare and paint/stain your timber retaining wall. To start you off, I suggest looking at the Intergrain 10L Merbau Exterior Nature's Timber Oil and the Johnstone's 4L Jarrah Exterior Timber Oil

There are various options available at the store regarding stain/paint colour. I recommend visiting your local store and looking at the stain sample board at the paint department. Once you find a colour that you like go and speak to the paint specialist so that they can prepare it for you. My best advice is to make sure that the surface of the retaining wall is clean and free of dirt and debris before you begin staining or painting it.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How best to colour and protect timber retaining wall?

Thanks for the info Eric. I picked this up from Bunnings. The paint is water based so just wondering if oil based is better as the timber is exposed to sun and rain? I am worried if I use the wrong product!

Re: How best to colour and protect timber retaining wall?

Hello @swong1

I would say at this point in time they are just as good as the oil-based products. If you prepare the surface of your retaining wall properly the paint should work with no issues. You can always test a small corner first if you wish to see what the stain is going to look like. My best advice is to use a good brush when staining your retaining wall.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
