Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi

I need to replace Colourbond fence with Aluminium slate gate (width 1630 x height 1845 mm approx.) This is DIY kit which I have assembled. Gates hinge arrangement is top and bottom (bottom hinge support to ground and has dyna bolt and top hinge has setscrew to fix with gate post).

Photo of current Colourbond fence, slat gate hinge arrangement and assembled gate is attached for better understanding.

I have been supplied 2 gate posts (Aluminium) of 65 x 65 x 2 mm for both sides of gate.

These posts need to install on each side of wall (1 is with house brick and other with boundary wall towards the road look like limestone brick)

I need your advice which bolting/screw arrangement for each side is best suited for this case. Please share the product link and total number of bolts/screws shall be used on each side

Also , my preference is to attach the hinge side of door to the limestone brick side (that wall height is less than 1800 as visible in picture). Will that be any issue ?

Thanks

Hassan

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi

I have used ramset-6-x-75mm-galvanised-ankascrew-masonry-anchor

Pics are attached basically its a top and bottom bearing support load gate . There is 1 hinge at the top as visible in pic and bottom support hinge

To my understanding top 2 screws are moved slightly . There is a gap on 3rd on as well but it is from start due to brick misalignment.. Also for info at the time of installation . Alignment of gate is checked and was perfectly leveller both horizontally and vertically.

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi @shaqqi,

What size hole did you predrill in the blocks to receive the AnkaScrews? Did you feel them solidly biting and did they pull tight against the post? Did you feel the screw bottom out? Did you maybe tighten it so much that you then felt it become loose?

Unless the hole has blown out, or they didn't pull tight against the post I can't see why they would've pulled away.

I think the best course of action from here is to remove the post so we can inspect the hole the screws went into.

If the hole hasn't blown out, you might be able to just drill the hole larger and use either 10 x 75mm Galvanised AnkaScrews or 12 x 75mm Galvanised AnkaScrews.

If the hole has blown out, you can potentially use Chemset to set threaded rods in place and then use a nut on the threaded rod to tighten the post against the block.

Once you've removed the post so you can inspect the holes, please upload some photos and I'll happily assist further.

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi Jacob,

Hole has not blown out. as brick is thicket than 200 mm thick.

I used a 5.5 size drill bit to make a hole in the brick for 6mm eska screw. However, when I drilled and tightened the screw, I realized I hadn't drilled the hole to the full depth. I removed the screw and drilled deeper to ensure the correct length. After reinserting and fully tightening the screw, I noticed it didn’t feel as tight against the wall as it initially did. Despite this, the last few threads engaged securely, and the post was fixed tightly in place.

Only issue is once i removed i have to install same day till i got your response so i have to get it everything prepared so can install same time .

I am little concerned on using a bigger size screw then have to drill again which can lead to same thing as i have used the correct drill bit size for wall

Thanks

Hassan

Hi Eric

It's not secured yet.i am just sharing the scenario I faces at time of installation of post during  first time I.e. unscrewing to drill and then screwing it again may have loosen the drill hole

Thanks

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi Hassan (@shaqqi),

I'm fairly confident that removing the AnkaScrews after finding they bottom out and then reinstalling them in the same hole is the cause of the issue.

The screw thread is designed to cut into the surrounding material. This cutting action can often fracture the internal walls of the hole. This is not an issue if the screw stays in place, however, removing it will relieve the pressure keeping this fractured material in place. When you removed the screw to deepen the hole, the screws will have brought this fractured material out with it, essentially widening the hole and making it unusable with the same AnkaScrew.

From here, my suggestion is to size up to either an 8 x 75mm Galvanised AnkaScrew or a 10 x 75mm Galvanised AnkaScrew and ensure the hole is deep enough, so you don't need to remove and reinstate it.

Use either an 8mm or 10mm masonry bit, depending on the AnkaScrew, and put a piece of tape around the masonry bit to act as a depth gauge for the masonry bit.

You need to be confident that it will sit deep enough in the hole the first time, so double-check that the hole is deep enough before installing the screws.

Once you're confident that the holes are the correct diameter and depth, install the AnkaScrews.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
