Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi

I need to replace Colourbond fence with Aluminium slate gate (width 1630 x height 1845 mm approx.) This is DIY kit which I have assembled. Gates hinge arrangement is top and bottom (bottom hinge support to ground and has dyna bolt and top hinge has setscrew to fix with gate post).

Photo of current Colourbond fence, slat gate hinge arrangement and assembled gate is attached for better understanding.

I have been supplied 2 gate posts (Aluminium) of 65 x 65 x 2 mm for both sides of gate.

These posts need to install on each side of wall (1 is with house brick and other with boundary wall towards the road look like limestone brick)

I need your advice which bolting/screw arrangement for each side is best suited for this case. Please share the product link and total number of bolts/screws shall be used on each side

Also , my preference is to attach the hinge side of door to the limestone brick side (that wall height is less than 1800 as visible in picture). Will that be any issue ?

Thanks

Hassan

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi @shaqqi,

Thank you for your question about mounting fence posts to both a brick and a block wall.

I'd suggest attaching the posts to both walls with Ramset 8 x 100mm Galvanised AnkaScrew Masonry Anchor with at least 4 per post at roughly even intervals. Ensure they go into the brick or block, not the mortar lines between them.

As long as the limestone brick is solidly anchored and in good condition, there shouldn't be any issues attaching the hinge post to it.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the advise

Just for my knowledge and future decision may i know the reason why you have proposed these instead of

Hex Anchor RamPlug or Dynabolts

and

with 65 x 65 mm post: the length of 100 mm proposed anchor screw is enough ? it will be approx. 30~35 mm inside the brick

Thanks

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hello @shaqqi

You have the option of drilling into the post and making the top hole bigger thereby allowing the screw to drop through and anchor from the inside of the post. This has the intended effect of allowing you to get a shorter masonry anchor. The Hex Anchor is a good anchor, but is better suited to static installations, the constant motion from the gate could loosen the anchor and the sleeve to fail. Dynabolts can also be used as an alternative to the AnkaScrew set.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the advise. I like this idea to drill a top hole bigger so post to attach with inner side of post.

In that case what ankascrew size and length is suitable. and also suggest what hole size i have to drill on top and inner side of post .

Is there any caps available to fill the top side of post covered ?

Thanks

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi @shaqqi,

A Ramset 10 x 75mm Galvanised AnkaScrew Masonry Anchor would be suitable. For the inner side of the post, a 10mm drill bit should be used. For the outer side, you'll need to drill a hole large enough for your socket bit to fit through. You'll need to use an extended socket set to tighten the Ankascrew within the post.

I am not aware of any caps that are designed for this purpose. Perhaps some black electrical tape would disguise the hole or you could potentially fill it with black silicone.

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi Mitch

Is it ok to used ramset-8-x-75mm-galvanised-ankascrew-masonry-anchor instead of 10 x 75 mm.

Bunnings shop where i visted i currently out of stock with 10 x 75.

8 x 75 has hold capacity of 300 kg and 10 x 75 of 440 kg.

Slat door will be 60 to 70kg max

Thanks

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi Mitch

I have installed the gate last weekend and it was good fit. I was thinking to write up my complete experience for future use to public but yesterday I observed the gate post has loosened from its position which is causing the gate to touch the ground while opening and need to lift upward to bring to close position with lock.

what went wrong any idea from my side and

now what shall I do retightened the screw will not do I think

shall i tightened the screw and install additional brackets on side

or remove the existing bolt and install the bolts of bigger size.

or something u have better idea

for info I have installed 4 screws with equal spacing

thanks

Re: Gate Posts installation to brick for slat gate having top and bottom hinge arrangement

Hi @shaqqi,

I'd need some more information before I can offer a solution.

Is it possible to get some photos of the attachment points without the gate in place? Can you also provide some photos of the gate hinge?

Which AnkaScrews did you end up using and were they installed so the head is on the inside of the post?

I can see in your second image that the top of the post has pulled away from the wall slightly. Is this the only location where this is happening or is the entire post loose?

Once you've provided some further details, I'll happily offer potential solutions to your issue.

It could involve using larger anchors and brackets like you've mentioned, but I'd need further details to give you a great solution.
