Decking frame Pine time to dry?

Hi,

I am renovating an old deck and replacing the treated pine sub-frame. I keep finding conflicting info and just wanted to double check a few things before i get into it.

Does the framing pine need to dry out over 6 weeks before i paint or put the top decking boards on, or is it already dry when i buy from you guys???

Also will painting the sub-frame give it a longer life or be more resistant to weathering etc.

If so, is there a recomended product that you suggest or recomend other than outdoor paint??

Thanks so Much

Kate

Re: Decking frame Pine time to dry?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @KatenDIY. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about treated Pine.

There's no need to let the treated Pine dry out before constructing your deck frame and adding the top decking boards. The Pine comes dry enough for use right away. The only time you'd need to wait is if you plan to paint the sub-frame for aesthetic purposes; Pine can sometimes release resin from knots, which could seep through the paint if applied too soon.

While painting can extend the life of Pine, your treated pine sub-frame is already H3-treated for above-ground use, providing good protection against decay and insects. Most people skip painting unless it's for aesthetic reasons.

If you're looking to add a protective coating and the frame will be hidden, consider using bitumen paint. This heavy-duty coating provides excellent moisture resistance, which is especially useful in damp or exposed areas. Bitumen paint creates a durable, waterproof barrier, further extending the life of your sub-frame without requiring regular maintenance.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
