Help! How Should I Build an L-Shaped Bed Platform with Modular Storage?
I’m a beginner DIYer, and I’m trying to make an L-shaped platform for my king single bed. The platform will go around the bed, and it needs to be sturdy enough to support weight because it will be stepped on regularly.
I’m using wood for the construction, and I’d like to make it modular, with detachable cube storage units. I’ve planned the following dimensions:
I’m not sure how to go about putting everything together since I’m new to DIY projects and don’t have many tools. I want to make sure it’s strong, stable, and safe. Here’s what I have in mind:
Materials: I’m planning to use wood, but I’m not sure what type to use. Should I go with plywood or MDF? Is one better than the other for this kind of platform?
Tools: I have basic tools, like a saw (hand saw or jigsaw), a drill, screws, wood glue, and a screwdriver. Will that be enough? Should I invest in any additional tools to make the process easier?
Assembly: I want to make sure the platform is sturdy since it will be stepped on often. How should I join the wood pieces together? Should I use screws, nails, or both? Are there any special techniques I should know to make sure the platform is strong and won’t wobble?
Modular Storage: I want to make the storage cubes detachable and modular. How do I ensure they are easy to assemble and rearrange but still secure enough to hold items? Any advice on creating modular sections that fit together well?
Finishing: What’s the best way to finish the wood to protect it from wear and tear? Should I paint it, stain it, or just use a wood sealant?
I’d really appreciate any advice or tips from anyone who’s done something similar before!
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @robpas. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about constructing a bed platform.
Is there any chance you could draw us a sketch to help illustrate what you intend to build? That would allow our members to better understand the project. Let me know if you need a hand uploading images.
I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the positioning of the platform, it's function and the relation between that and the measurements you've provided. Again, I'm not sure how the modular storage comes into play on a platform that is only 9cm tall. Will they sit on top of it? Were you planning on building these cubes too, or using pre-fabricated cube storage?
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Hey @MitchellMc thank you for reaching out
the modular part of the platform would be the two separate pieces of the cube storage, I think I worded it wrong, I might the piece are detachable for easy removal if need be I hope these drawings are alright many thanks ☺️
Hello @robpas
A typical king single is generally 107cm wide by 203cm long. Can you please confirm the size of your king single just to make sure the size is correct. Do you wish the cubicle step to go the entire length of the bed? I'm just curious about sizes you've given as it appears that it will not be covering the entire length of the bed. Please give me some time to draw up a sample image of your project and you can correct the measurements as we move forward. As soon as I finish the sketch, I'll post it here.
Thank you for your patience.
