Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @flummoxed01. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about replacing a window frame.

How rotten is the timber and is the frame holding the glass compromised? If it's only a trim piece on the frame then it could be carefully pryed away and replaced. If the rot is not significant or structural in nature, then you could remove the degraded timber and use wood hardener on the remaining. You'd then apply putty to re-establish what timber was removed.

You must be exceptionally careful when working around glass, as one tool slip could cause it to shatter. Remember your PPE, including safety glasses, a long-sleeved shirt, trousers and enclosed footwear.

If there is structural damaged and rot to the frame, then I would encourage you to enlist the services of a professional to perform the repair and reconstruct the frame.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

Thanks Mitchell- just the trims. What are my options on what sort of trims we should get? Ta

Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

It would be ideal to replace any currently degraded trims with timber of the closest size to them as possible @flummoxed01.

If you are able to remove a trim and take some measurements for us, I can provide the nearest similar products.

Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

Hello @flummoxed01

Would it be possible for you to remove one of the trims? We need to see the profile of the timber moulding. For example, it closely resembles the 12 x 12mm 2.4m Tri Quad Clear Pine. But please take extreme care when lifting the trim as it is very close to the glass. Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when working on your window frame.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

Thanks Eric- will try to pry one out tomorrow. If it is indeed 12mm, I am assuming it would be a straight forward fitting with brad nails after getting them mitred down?

Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

Hi @flummoxed01

If your window frame has no other surprises, it should technically be a straightforward preplacement. However, I would like to amend my example to an 11 x 11mm 5.4m Moulding H3 Treated Pine FJ Quad Clear LOSP. The 12mm one is plain pine and is not treated and will not be suitable for outside use. My apologies if this has caused you inconvenience.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

Hi Eric- see if this helps. The 11mm link doesnt work but will head into bunnings to see if I can find in store.

Re: How to replace rotten window trims?

Hello @flummoxed01

My apologies if the link did not work. I suggest just typing the description in the search bar 11 x 11mm 5.4m Moulding H3 Treated Pine FJ Quad Clear LOSP. But if you are on your way to the store, I also suggest speaking to the timber specialist so that they can make further suggestions regarding the timber moulding.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
