How can I paint over a two-pack painted wooden kitchen cabinet with enamel paint?

How can I paint over a two-pack painted wooden kitchen cabinet with enamel paint?

Must I sand the 2 pack paint away before applying the enamel paint?

I also need to fill a small hole on the panel before painting it.

What can I use to seal the enamel paint soit doesn't come off or peel?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Leebc. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting cabinet doors.

Ultimately, sanding the two-pack off would be the best way to ensure that your enamel paint adheres correctly. Even if you were to sand the gloss back, there's no guarantee that a primer will adhere to it. Given this, I'd recommend sanding the two-pack off entirely and using the Dulux 1-step on the timber, and then, once dry, Dulux Aquanamel over it. It's important to know that the two-pack product is an extremely durable industrial-grade coating, whereas the Aquanamel is significantly softer. It would be fine for a quick refresh, but it's not a long-term solution for a paint coating in a high-wear environment like a kitchen.

If prepared and applied correctly, there is no need for an additional sealing coat to prevent the enamel paint from peeling.

Remember to wear PPE, including a face mask and safety goggles.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Just thought I'd add to Mitch's reply that you should get plenty of inspiration from our collection of 20 kitchens transformed with paint by community members.

Re: How can I paint over a 2 pack painted wooden kitchen cabinet with enamel paint?

Hi Mitchell, Thanks for your advice.

I am repairing/painting one of the drawer panels in a study room. The other 2-pack panels are ok.

to spend an exhorbitant amount of money to get it 2-pack painted.

I have applied a Superior gloss enamel, how can I achieve a 2-pack like gloss finish to blend in with the other draer panels?

What paint brush should I use?

Appreciate your advice.

Hi Colin (@Leebc),

Two-pack is a high-gloss sprayed coating, and achieving the exact same look wouldn't be possible with standard off-the-shelf paints. Can you link me to the superior gloss enamel product you've used? I can check to see whether there is a compatible gloss topcoat that might help it look more similar.

I've attached photo's of the paint.

The colour matches the underlying 2 - pack .

Re: How can I paint over a 2 pack painted wooden kitchen cabinet with enamel paint?

Hi @Leebc,

Dulux Supernamel is a finished coating, so no clear coat can go over it. Was your question about getting it to look more like a two-pack surrounding the gloss level it achieved or more about creating a smooth finish that mimics the sprayed two-pack? Using a high-quality brush and keeping it at a shallow angle to the surface will help prevent brush strokes. You should lay your paint on and immediately go back over the area, holding the brush at a shallow angle, and lightly brush the paint in long, continuous strokes to lay off. You should then leave it alone so it can self-level.

@MitchellMc

It's more about creating a smooth finish that mimics the sprayed two-pack, so it can blend in with the other drawers.

Thanks for your advice.

Colin.

Re: How can I paint over a 2 pack painted wooden kitchen cabinet with enamel paint?

I recommend trying the approach I mentioned above, but a sprayed finish will always be exceptionally smoother than a brushed one, @Leebc. It might be a bit excessive for a single drawer front, but you might like to consider picking up a spray gun. It will certainly come in handy if you have some walls or a fence to paint in the future.
