Re: Why do apple tree leaves fall off?

Hello @AlanGUO

Apple tree leaves can turn yellow, dry up, and fall off soon after they grow due to several possible factors. One of the most common causes is water stress, which can result from either overwatering or underwatering. Apple trees need consistent moisture, and improper watering can lead to stress that causes the leaves to yellow and drop. Additionally, nutrient deficiencies, especially in nitrogen, iron, or magnesium, can lead to yellowing as the tree struggles to absorb the necessary nutrients from the soil.

Poor soil quality or an incorrect pH level can exacerbate this issue. Pests and diseases are also culprits; for example, aphids, fire blight, and apple scab can cause damage to the leaves, making them yellow, dry out, and fall prematurely. Environmental factors, such as frost damage or exposure to intense heat and sun, can also harm young leaves, causing them to turn yellow and fall off.

Over-fertilization, which can burn the roots, and transplant shock from newly planted trees may also result in early leaf loss. Identifying the specific cause requires observing the tree’s symptoms closely and possibly conducting a soil test or consulting a specialist if the problem persists.

To treat yellowing and early leaf drop in apple trees, ensure proper watering by providing consistent moisture without overwatering, and mulch to retain moisture. Conduct a soil test to identify nutrient deficiencies and apply the correct fertilizer, avoiding over-fertilization. Treat pests like aphids with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and use fungicides for fungal diseases such as apple scab. Prune infected branches to manage bacterial diseases like fire blight.
