How to landscape narrow side of house?

Hi All,

I’m after some suggestions/help on how we should landscape this narrow side of our house. We need to have water flow away from house but also have a neighbour who’s house and slab sits quite high. See attached photos.

Re: Wanting to build Narrow Raised Garden Bed along fence

Hi @JesseS6,

I have combined this post with your older one as they pertain to each other and can provide context for our members.

Unfortunately, the only materials suitable for retaining soil up to a height of 600mm will be 50mm thick at a minimum. It's also necessary for a sleeper against the fence line as fences are not designed for direct contact with soil or to resist the lateral forces applied to them by this amount of soil.

Anchoring the garden bed in place can be done with a sleeper acting as a post or with metal sleeper posts. Both options will need to be concreted into the ground to resist the forces applied to them by the soil pushing outwards.

Check out How To Build a Raised Garden Bed With Sleepers for an example where sleepers are concreted into the ground to create raised garden beds.

Allow me to tag @Noyade, @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their thoughts.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: Wanting to build Narrow Raised Garden Bed along fence

Evening @JesseS6

Are you worried about the soil from your neighbours place coming under the fence or water coming under the fenceline?

If you arnt worried about that then long beds made up of the timber sleepers that are freestanding may be the answer.

If you are worried about the "look" or about soil/water entering your property then maybe something along the lines of Tuscan Path 150mm x 6m Black Garden Edging - Black mounted as close to the timber as possible would help?

Re: How to landscape narrow side of house?

Hi @JesseS6

I share the same concern as with @JacobZ in avoiding building a garden bed that relies on the neighbouring fence as one of the sides. Within a reasonably short time frame it will start to deteriorate and/or disfigure the palings noticeably on the other side. My preference is to build a stand alone garden such as what @Dave-1 suggested which would be a very easy and economical project or the more substantials one using the joiners @JacobZ linked to which will not encroach into the walking space with a 50mm sleeper. Something like the photo below.
