We have teddy bear magnolias down both sides of the garden. However one side has had significantly more growth and each to the trees have denser healthier looking leaves. Soil is the same on both sides, assuming it must be related to sunlight but open to other ideas. Also looking for a fertiliser recommendation. Ideally one we can use on our nandinas too. Cheers
Hi @Sprayman44,
Given that both sides have the same soil, the difference in growth is likely due to varying sunlight exposure. Magnolias generally prefer a spot with full sun to partial shade, but if one side of the garden receives less light, it can affect the growth rate and leaf density. Plants that receive less sunlight often grow slower and may have sparser foliage as they’re not getting the same energy levels from photosynthesis.
If the slower-growing side is the same area you mentioned in your previous discussion, this side may actually be experiencing issues from over-exposure. Reflective heat from the fence can intensify the sunlight and create a much warmer microclimate, which may stress the magnolias and hinder their growth. In such conditions, leaves can dry out more quickly, and the plants may not retain moisture as effectively, affecting overall health and leaf density.
With time, regular care, and the right fertilisation, your slower-growing magnolias are likely to catch up. Consistent feeding will support healthy development and help the plants establish a stronger root system, making them more resilient. For a fertiliser that can support both your magnolias and nandinas, I recommend using a balanced fertiliser, such as Yates Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Fertiliser and Soil Improver. This option can be used on a variety of plants, including magnolias and nandinas. Apply it in spring and again in late summer to encourage robust growth and vibrant leaves.
With patience and the right care, you should start to see an improvement in growth and leaf density, and eventually, your magnolias on both sides will develop a similar lush appearance.
