What is the Flexi Storage weight limit when in plasterboard instead of stud?

I was searching for adding new shelves to garage wall.

After going through couple of options, I liked Flexi storage.

I am planning to use two of these https://www.bunnings.com.au/flexi-storage-home-solutions-900mm-black-double-slot-hang-track_p2583632  and 8 of  https://www.bunnings.com.au/flexi-storage-home-solutions-1206mm-black-double-slot-wall-strip_p258363...

I went to Bunnings and saw that these can go into plasterboard as hang track can be anchored to studs .

How much weight double slot wall strip can support when using self drilling wall anchor to plasterboard ?

https://www.bunnings.com.au/flexi-storage-home-solutions-360mm-black-double-slot-bracket_p2583653  brackets has max 40 kg listed between pair but there are lots of variables.

My plan is to use 4 strips per hanging track and add shelves at 30cms or so gap

I think they should be enough for general items.

Would anyone please provide feedback if they have used this system?

Thanks

Re: Flexi storage weight limit when in plasterboard instead of stud

Hi @legopoint,

The Flexi Storage Home Solutions 900mm Black Double Slot Hang Track is designed to be fixed to timber stud work, not plasterboard. Hang Tracks allow fixings to be mounted to a stud frame, allowing the system to be load-bearing.

If the system is not fixed into the studs, all the weight ratings on the product will be negated. The system's capacity will then revert to what the plasterboard fixings can hold. For instance, if you were to use Ramset Nylon WallMate Plasterboard Anchors, they have a capacity of up to 10kgs each. If you used four anchors to mount the track, your entire shelving system would have a capacity of less than 40kg. You'd need to have far less than 40kg on the shelving system to be safe.

As mentioned, the system is designed for timber or masonry mounting, if you did choose to mount it into plasterboard you run the risk of it failing. My recommendation is that you pick up a stud finder and mount into the timber studs and not the plasterboard. Here's a helpful step-by-step guide: How to use a stud finder.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: Flexi storage weight limit when in plasterboard instead of stud

Thanks @MitchellMc

Yeah, hang track is going into studs but I was wondering if double slot wall strip https://www.bunnings.com.au/flexi-storage-home-solutions-1206mm-black-double-slot-wall-strip_p258363... can be anchored to plasterboard.

I weighed some boxes by adding different items and not a single box go over 10 Kg.

Heaviest things were some hardbound books and Dewalt TSTAK box with drill, driver and 2 batteries.

Re: Flexi storage weight limit when in plasterboard instead of stud

Hello @legopoint

The Flexi Storage Home Solutions 1206mm Black Double Slot Wall Strip can be installed on the plasterboard wall. Just keep in mind that the wall strip can only support the weight rating of the plasterboard wall which is 10kg.

I propose running timber strips across the studs which will allow you to anchor the wall strips into timber instead of the plasterboard. The timber can be painted the same colour as your wall so that it will not be too obvious that the wall strip was mounted on timber strips.

I propose having a look at the 42 x 18mm 5.4m Moulding White Pine FJ Primed DAR. It is possible to use thicker and larger timber, I'll leave the choice up to you.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Flexi storage weight limit when in plasterboard instead of stud

Thanks @EricL

That is a good idea.

For some previous minor projects, I got screw length based on depth of item. So for example if I am attaching something to stud which is 10mm deep then I'll get 10(item)+10(plasterboard)+25(for stud)  = 45mm screws.  Similar to https://www.bunnings.com.au/zenith-10g-x-45mm-gold-passivated-type-17-wafer-head-timber-screws-50-pa...

I read somewhere that unless securing very heavy items, for example TV bracket, don't go beyond 1inch in stud which is 25.4mm.

Do you think above approach is good generally ?

Re: Flexi storage weight limit when in plasterboard instead of stud

Hello @legopoint

I suggest going for the longer screw Zenith 10G x 50mm Gold Passivated Type 17 Countersunk Head Timber Screws. The extra 5mm will provide extra grip.
