Garage transformed into a modern art studio

We transformed our garage into a modern art studio with a sophisticated black and white theme to highlight artwork. The chosen colours, Lexicon and Namadji, provide a clean, neutral backdrop that enhances the vibrancy of the displayed art without casting any hues onto the pieces. As an art tutor, I aimed to create a professional and welcoming environment for my small classes. The studio's aesthetic ensures that it looks both stylish and inviting, making it an ideal space for fostering creativity and inspiration among my students.

Steps

Step 1

Preparation:

Cleared the Garage: We removed all items from the garage to create an empty workspace.

Cleaned the Walls and Floor: We swept and washed the walls and floor to remove any dust, dirt, or grease, ensuring the surface was dry before proceeding.

Step 2

Painting the Walls:

Primed the Walls: Although the walls had been painted before, we applied a primer to ensure better colour adhesion.

Main Wall Colour:

  • Applied Taubmans Easy Coat - Lexicon: Using rollers and brushes, we applied the paint to the main walls. We started with the edges and corners using a brush, then used a roller for the larger areas. We applied two coats for an even finish, allowing sufficient drying time between coats.

Feature Wall Colour:

  • Applied Taubmans Easy Coat - Namadji: We painted the designated feature wall with the darker colour. We used the same technique as above, applying two coats for a consistent and rich finish.

Step 3

Preparing the Floor:

Cleaned the Floor with Berger Jet Dry Active Cleaner: We followed the product instructions to thoroughly clean the concrete floor. This step was crucial for ensuring the paint adhered properly.

Rinsed and Dried: After cleaning, we rinsed the floor well and allowed it to dry completely.

Step 4

Painting the Floor:

Mixed the Paint:

  • Added Berger Jet Dry True Grip to Berger Jet Dry Heavy Duty Gloss Concrete & Paving Paint - Deep Charcoal: We followed the manufacturer's instructions for mixing the non-slip additive into the paint, stirring well to ensure an even distribution.

Applied the Paint:

  • First Coat: We poured the paint into a paint tray and used a roller with an extension handle to apply the paint evenly across the floor. We started from the farthest corner and worked our way towards the exit to avoid stepping on the wet paint. We allowed the first coat to dry as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Second Coat: We applied a second coat for durability and a uniform finish. Again, we started from the farthest corner and worked towards the exit. We allowed the floor to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 5

Finishing Touches:

  • Inspected and Touched Up: We checked for any missed spots or uneven areas on both the walls and floor, touching up as necessary.
  • Reinstalled Fixtures: We reinstalled any fixtures or hardware once the paint was fully dry.

Step 6

Setting Up the Art Studio:

  • Installed Shelving Units: We installed 5 x Bunnings Montgomery 1830 x 910 x 410mm 5 Tier Shelving Units to house the art supplies in style.
  • Arranged Furniture and Equipment: We moved in our art supplies, furniture, and any equipment needed for the studio, arranging them to maximize the space and allow for creativity and productivity.
  • Added Personal Touches: We decorated with plants, inspirational quotes, and other items to make the space feel like our own.

Conclusion:

Our new modern art studio, with its sophisticated black and white theme, is now ready to inspire creativity and showcase artwork. The chosen colours and finishes ensure a professional and functional space that highlights the art without distraction.
