Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Many Bunnings stores offer a timber cutting service to help you get your wood home and get started on your project.

Here are some frequently asked questions about our timber cutting service to help Bunnings Workshop members.

What type of cuts can be done at a Bunnings store?

Bunnings stores typically have two types of saws for timber cutting.

  • Panel saw – used to cut large sheet materials into smaller rectangular sections and pieces. The machine is capable of both horizontal and vertical cuts on most of our board products. Some examples of products that can be cut using a panel saw include MelaminePlywood and MDF.

Is this service available at my local Bunnings?

You can check whether the timber cutting service is available at a nearby store by visiting the Bunnings website. Here’s how:

  • Mobile device - Select your nearest store and then click on your store's name on the top left of the screen. This will take you to your store's information page, including details about what services they offer

  • Desktop computer - Type the nearest store's name in the change store drop-down and then click on store details. This will take you to your store's information page, including details on what services they offer.

Can I bring my own piece of timber to be cut?

Due to the many variables associated with timber products, we can only cut products purchased from our stores.

When is the best time to visit a store for timber cutting?

Visiting at a quieter time will ensure faster service. It's best to avoid weekends and public holidays as many other D.I.Y. enthusiasts will also be looking to build their own projects.

What if I want to do the cutting at home?

Knowing what saw to use and how to use it is the key to success. Here are some useful guides to get you started:

What if I can't get my timber home?

We offer a number of options to get your products home safely. You can use our free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. If you need more time you can also hire a trailer, a ute or a van to suit your needs. We also offer a comprehensive delivery service to assist you in getting your purchases home. Most stores offer same day or next day service. Please contact your nearest store for details.

Update 14/08/2024: The Bunnings team have provided the following information on our cutting service.

Re: How accurate is Bunnings panel cutting?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @mrsplinters. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about our cutting service.

If you need exact cuts to the millimetre, it would be best to have the boards cut 5-10mm larger than needed so you can fit them in your car and do the final trim at home. We like to make an allowance of up to +/-5mm tolerance in accuracy, as it's not a precision cutting service. I'd suggest you have a chat with the timber-cutting team member at your local store, as they might be confident enough to make the exact cuts for you.

In my experience, factory edges are just about perfect and square.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

does bunnings cut mdf or laminate board that I already have for shelves

I already have a large mdf/laminate board enough for adding few shelves in my existing cabinet. I don’t want to buy a new sheet of board as I already it at home. Can I bring them to Bunnings to cut them to the sizes i want? I most probably have bought it at bunnings few years back for a different project.

Re: does bunnings cut mdf or laminate board that I already have for shelves

Hello @ritumeher

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us.

I'm sorry, but store policy only allows our team to cut timber purchased from the store. However, if you can provide proof of purchase for that melamine panel our team will be more than happy to cut that panel for you.

I recommend considering cutting the melamine panel at home with a circular saw. I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to choose the right power saw for the job by @Adam_W. Here is a link to our best advice: How do you make long and straight mitre cuts?

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when using a circular saw.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let me know.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for your response. I don’t think I have the proof of purchase. However, i can try cutting it on my own using a circular saw. The links you have provided are pretty handy, I’ll definitely give it a try

Re: Does Bunnings cut wood to size?

Hello @EricaS

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us.

I'm sorry, but the shop saws are only capable of straight cuts. If you need to cut a semi-circle shape into your panel, it's possible to do it with either a jigsaw or a Trojan 170mm Compass Saw

My best advice is to practice with either tool first on some off cut timber before you commit to cutting your actual timber panel.

Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when working on your project.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hello @dpete

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us.

I'm sorry but the shop saws can't cut doors as they are not built to do precision cuts. As an alternative, I suggest proceeding to the special orders desk and asking for a custom door quote. In this manner you'll get the door size that you need without having to worry about cutting it down.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
