Narrow laundry renovation

This narrow laundry looks brighter and feels more open after installing white cabinetry and moving the taps under a new benchtop.

The project

We had the original laundry in our house and decided it was time to give it a makeover. It was a narrow space and we wanted it to look simple and open.

I did all the work myself except moving the plumbing. It took about a week to do and we kept to budget. We are happy with the results, and I got to learn new skills.

Our design gives us more counter space now, and the white cabinets make the room look brighter. The hardest part was cutting the benchtop to size and fitting it into a narrow space. I had never used a circular saw before, but it wasn't too hard. My favourite feature is the round sink. It is just the right size and functions really well.

We moved all the taps to underneath the benchtop and hid it inside one of the cabinets. It gave us more bench space and a cleaner look.

Once the water outlets were moved, we repaired the walls.

We sealed the wet areas and painted the walls and ceiling.

The washing machine was too heavy to move so we kept it in the laundry and worked around it.

My wife chose these marble-look subway tiles.

I cut the benchtop to fit the space and varnished to prevent water damage. I prepared the surface by sanding with 240-grit sandpaper and then applied Timber Protect Gloss One Coat Clear Water Based Varnish using a paint brush. I applied three coats and left it to dry overnight between coats with a final sand after the last coat.

I was surprised by how easy it was to install the cabinets.

We love the soft-close drawers.

Let me tag @Nham to make them aware of your question. I believe the benchtop is a solid oak product called Rasunda. The equivalent at the store is the Kaboodle 2400 x 600 x 36mm Hevea Timber Benchtop. 

It sounds like an exciting project. Any photo updates you can provide while renovating your laundry would be much appreciated. Eric was spot on, I used the Rasunda worktop from IKEA, I think they stop selling it but the Bunnings version would be similar. The wood was treated with linseed and tung tree oil then top off with varnish. I think the oils bring out the colour but the oak does yellow a bit over time.

Hi, This looks great! I am wondering if you could tell me what products were required and how you actually installed the top on the wall cabinetry? Im actually having an l shape so will need to connect two together . One end will be floating and the other on top of cupboards. 

I am working on the sink cutout and staining but stuck as to how to install and connect both.

The Kaboodle equivalent for cabinetry would be:

• Kaboodle 600mm Base Cabinet ( X2 )

• Kaboodle 600mm Wall Cabinet ( X3 )
   
• Kaboodle 300mm Gloss White Modern Cabinet Door ( X10 )
   
• Kaboodle 600mm Gloss White Modern 2 Drawer Panels ( X1 )
   
• Kaboodle 2400mm Kickboard - Gloss White.

At the moment, I suggest using a timber project panel of your choice that's available at the store or you can use any colour from the Kaboodle benchtop range.

The bench-top is solid oak and I cut it to size to fit the area. I think Eric listed some alternatives for the cabinets, but I got all our cabinets from Ikea (VOXTORP Door, high-gloss white). To attach the bench-top. there was a metal brace running across all the floor cabinets, I then used woodscrews to secure the top in place, also we used some L-shaped or right-angle brackets to secure the top to the wall stud. Do you have photo of what you are trying to connect...
