How to paint an acrylic shower base?

Hello, I just wondered what the best paint is for an acrylic shower base and an acrylic bath please? (I'm a total newbie to renovations). Thank you.

Re: Acrylic shower base

Hi Dani,

If you're looking to paint an acrylic shower base and an acrylic bath, here are some recommendations:

1. Specialized Paint:  For acrylic surfaces, it's essential to use paint specifically formulated for plastic or acrylic. Regular paint will not adhere properly and can chip or peel off over time.

2. Two-Part Epoxy Paint: A two-part epoxy paint is highly durable and water-resistant, making it ideal for use in showers and baths. It provides a tough, long-lasting finish that can withstand the moisture and wear typical in a bathroom environment.

3. Preparation: Proper surface preparation is crucial for the paint to adhere well:
- Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the acrylic surface to remove any soap scum, dirt, and grease. Use a non-abrasive cleaner to avoid scratching the surface.
- Sand the Surface: Lightly sand the acrylic with fine-grit sandpaper to create a rough texture for the paint to adhere to. Be sure to clean off any dust after sanding.
- Primer: Apply a primer suitable for plastic surfaces. This helps the paint bond better to the acrylic.

4. Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing and applying the paint. Ensure good ventilation while painting and allow adequate drying time between coats.

5.  Product Recommendation: The "Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit" is a  popular choice for refinishing acrylic surfaces. It provides a durable finish and is available at Bunnings.

By following these steps and using the recommended products, you can achieve a professional-looking finish on your acrylic shower base and bath.

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

Best regards,
Zee

Re: Acrylic shower base

Hello @Dani29

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your acrylic shower base.

Would it be possible for you to post a photo of your shower base and tub? This will give our members a better idea of the condition of your base and tub. It might be possible to recover the finish of the acrylic surface with a surface cleaner such as the Gumption Paste 750g Multipurpose Cleaner, it's an abrasive cleaner that could be useful for cutting the surface back. You can then re-polish it with Autosol 75ml Acrylic Polish

Just a friendly reminder regarding using Rust-Oleum Tub And Tile Refinishing Kit. Their description and uses specifically states, "Do not use on areas exposed to extreme heat such as stovetops, or constant high humidity environments. Do not use in continuous water immersion such as swimming pools, hot tubs, ponds, or saunas"

If you are thinking of using a two-part epoxy product, I suggest engaging the services of a professional acrylic restoration specialist. They will have the equipment and experience to re-seal your shower tray. There is also the option of replacing both the shower tray and bath with a new set.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
