Could you provide a bit more information and maybe some pictures of the container you're referring to? That would help our members understand the type of lid and locking mechanism you're dealing with and offer the best suggestions.

 

If you are referring to one of the locking jars I've pictured below, sometimes the gasket can hold the lid shut. Once you've released the clip, submerge the jar in the sink in some warm soapy water and let it soak for ten minutes. This might soften and loosen the gasket, allowing you to gently pry the lid open.
