best way to seal wooden handrail

Hi, what product / solution would you recommend to help seal and protect a wooden handrail which we sanded back to raw finish?

We want to keep its natural colour and have a matte / opaque finish to pair with a natural clear oak finish on the steps (not seeking a prefect match).

The spindles will be painted in white while we will keep the main posts natural same as the handrail.

thanks!

Re: best way to seal wooden handrail

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Mark27. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about coating a handrail.

@Jewelleryrescue's response is spot on. A water-based product like Cabot's Cabothane Matt Clear is an excellent choice for sealing and protecting your sanded wooden handrail. It will provide a durable finish while maintaining the natural colour and giving you that matt look you're after.

Since you’re pairing it with a clear oak finish on the steps, the subtle differences in finish will be barely noticeable, and the overall look will still be cohesive.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
