Why do hollow core internal doors have striped/ridged edge?

Does anyone know why hollow core doors have a striped/ridged edge? And can it be removed? Hume brand hollow core doors from Bunnings were used in my home renovation. After painting, every door has a partial ridged/striped finish, on the edge, where the hinges are attached. I've been told this is how they're manufactured there is nothing you can do, or a power planer has "chattered" on the door edge leaving stripes, or the painter should have sanded to remove the stripes/ridges, or the carpenter should have filled to a smooth finish. QBCC said it was manufacturing and rejected it. I can't believe that, as Hume sell millions of these doors and nobody would use them if this was the finish. The old hollow core internal doors were smooth, for comparison. Would anyone know what this is, how to fix it, and who is responsible for the fix (carpenter or painter) please? Thank you.

It's possible that the ridged or striped edge profile on your door could have been resolved through some light sanding or filling. Occasionally, minor manufacturing imperfections can slip through quality control, which may be the case with this particular door. If your door is still under warranty and you’re dissatisfied with its finish, you might consider asking your builder about exchanging it for one with a smooth edge finish.

Alternatively, a simpler solution would be to have the painter return to sand and repaint the striped edge, achieving the finish you’re looking for. Rather than focusing on any potential cause, taking an amicable collaborative approach should help ensure the door is completed to your satisfaction.

I have tried an amicable approach and the solutions you have suggested. The builder ignored me, said I was unreasonable, and to go to QBCC to resolve it. So I did that.

The team at Hume Doors reviewed the images you provided. Since they use finger-jointed pine for their stiles, which typically doesn’t experience this issue, they’re unsure if these doors are from their range. However, they’re eager to assist further and would appreciate any order reference numbers you might have to help identify the doors. Would you be able to provide that information?

Thank you. I have contacted Hume myself and they declined to reply in writing but did tell me over the phone that their doors don't have striping on the frame edge (of course they would say that!) and that based on the images provided (the same ones I've used here) it looked like the doors needed sanding. I'll be very interested in what they reply to Bunnings with so thank you for doing that.

Not sure if you saw my second reply @RLD, but if you could provide an order number to verify that they are Hume Doors, then they are more than happy to investigate further.

The builder refuses to provide the brand name, place of purchase or a receipt number for Bunnings/Hume to check and assist me. 

I have contacted Bunnings in Townsville and asked them what hollow core brands they sell. Their response was Hume or Corinthian.

Without that information, I don't know what else can be done by you/Hume in this conversation. I'm pretty sure they are Hume doors from Bunnings, based on what the builder said at the time. I have seen Hume hollow core doors at Bunnings with a striped edge but it is flat, whereas my doors are ridged stripes.

I'm afraid without that information Hume won't be able to track down your door. Was there by any chance a copy in your contract of the materials used for your home? Perhaps a reference number was used or a copy of the docket when the doors were purchased? Another option could be to go through the QBCC and request that the builder provide you with the docket for the doors.
