What self levelling floor for old house?

Hi

How to DIY self level floor for old house?

Our old bedroom carpet will be removed. Tidy up the floor.

We want to know if self level floor is better than hybrid board for DIY?

By comparison two methods, please advise pro and con of  budgets, tools, time required,  lifespan,  etc?

Thanks in advance

Hi @Honest52,

Please share some photos of your flooring underneath the carpet to show what you are working with. It is difficult for community members to provide specific and helpful advice without sufficient detail.

Thanks,

Jason

Just old timber floor in a 50 years old house bedroom.

Do we need to add a waterproof sheet first before using self level floor compound to protect the timber floors?

Re: What self levelling floor for old house?

Hi @Honest52,

Thank you for your question about floor coverings in your bedroom.

Self-levelling compounds are not supposed to be used as a finished floor surface, so if you were looking to use it in this way, then this is not really an option.

If you are looking for ease of installation, hybrid flooring is a better option as you will just need to prepare the surface and lay it. Have a look at our Carpet & Flooring - D.I.Y. Advice for some guidance.

If you need to level the timber floor, the standard method is to remove the floorboards or flooring panels, and plane or pack the subframe before relaying the boards. Have a look at How To Level a Subfloor for some guidance on this.

You could also use Dunlop Timber Floor Leveller, but you would then need to lay flooring of your choice over the top.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Jacob
